In the United States each state runs a Medicaid program for health care for the poor. Qualification is based upon financial resources.

Generally, a person must first spend most of their own resources - cash savings and invested monies - before they can qualify for Medicaid. You may not give those monies to family members in order that the patient is "poor" enough to qualify. There is a "look back" period, 3 years or longer, in which the government can evaluate recent gifts a person has made to determine if they have attempted to circumvent financial rules to qualify for Medicaid.

Certain assest are exempt from the Medicaid requirements meaning that a person does not have to sell certain assests prior to qualifying. The primary home, a car, and household goods (all subject to certain limits) are exempt.

There are websites for most common types of cancers with information about assistance as well as information about the disease. You can do a web search to find one of these organizations.

If your dad is over 50, you can check with AARP. They have a lot of information about organizations which may be able to help as well as insurance options.

Good luck to your dad.
