I didn't get my license until I was 20. My parents refused to teach me to drive (though they had taught my older brother--don't know what's up with that!) and I had to get friends to help me learn the basics. Then, I went to school for 2 years and lived on campus and just rode my bike or walked most places. Sometimes I got rides or rode the bus, and I took taxis from the airport when I flew back and forth from home.

I took a car back with me to college when I moved out of the dorms. I was super scared to drive, even in my little college town. I thought I was going to die every time I got in the car. I just slowly got over the fear--a lot of it is just about getting out and driving a little bit. Just pull over if the fear gets too strong. Drive a little more, then a little more than that...slowly work your way up to driving around. It can be a real problem--investigate therapy and meds if it's too much to handle on your own. But the benefits of driving are worth the stress. Just take normal precautions--never drive under the influence of ANYTHING, including extreme anxiety, never drive when you're super-tired, and follow ALL traffic rules.

I've never been in a serious accident and now driving is actually really fun. I drive for miles and miles--before gas got so expensive, I'd get out and drive 20 or 30 miles for fun, just go someplace for the hell of it. It's freedom, man. Freedom isn't without its risks, but you wanna be free, right? Work through your issues about driving and you'll be glad you did.
