I am wondering how old a puppy should be before we give her rawhide chew bones. She has this need to chew incessantly and I'd love to get her one if it's safe. Also, what's your opinion of invisible fencing?
Thanks.

please do NOT give your dog a rawhide chew at any age. They can cause serious problems with their intestinal tract. I have seen numerous dogs come in with obstructions due to rawhide. An obstruction is a blockage of the intestine so it cause a backup and is very painful and uncomfortable for your dog. Also, if you don't notice the problem it can cause the intestines to start dying. If you decide to feed her rawhide, always watch her so she doesn't swallow them whole. Also, if you notice her vomitting, not eating, her back is hunched, her belly is painful get her to a vet quickly. Those are the signs of an obstruction. Other treats you can give her are regular milkbones, carrots, ice cubes, anything small enough to fit down her throat without getting caught... Goodluck with your puppy!

for her chewing try a small towel soaked in water...then freeze it...let her chew in that for a few hours. That will help relieve some puppy teeth pain

I have heard that the rawhide bone fragments may get caught in the throat of a dog. As far as invisible fencing, I don't like it. A friend has one and I "feel" for his dogs when they get "shocked" by the current. It seems cruel. It's better to train dogs well, especially, those that want their dogs to run off-leash.

I don't like the rawhide chew bones, my dog always gets pieces stuck in his throat. They tend to go all ... "gummy" and soft after lots of chewing. Better to buy a different kind of chew bone.

Invisible fencing...not sure what you mean.. someone else will answer.

good luck...and buy the puppy something to chew on before she chews your furniture legs..shoes..etc.

Raw hide treats are the greatest for your dog. I would give it a Nylabone instead. Rawhide will swell once it get wet. The dog will eventually end up swallowing peices of the rawhide & it will swell in it's stomach and intestines.

Nylabones are great - when getting our puppy, we read that you shouldn't give rawhide to young puppies - BUT a friend came over and brought our 9 week old puppy a rawhide bone ... he loved it. Let her try it under your supervision ... but beware - too much can give her gas!

proceed with caution, depending on the size of the dog consider the size of the bone - for they can choke easily on small pieces

if is already chewing getting something good to chew on will help with its teething process plus playfulness time

have a friend who uses the invisible fence for his large dog and likes it but have no real opinion on it myself

it is electrical shock - think out all your options first

thanks for caring!

not good for dogs period. the raw hides will make the dog have blood in there stool. to where it looks like pure blood. i though something was wrong with my dogs. rushed them to the vet and when i said raw hide. the vet told me that's causing it. stop giving them and the dogs will be ok. i forgot and gave my 4 month old pup one and his stool was bloody. try to find a puppy safe bones at the pet shops. the ham bones you buy for dogs will do the same thing so avoid them as well. or you'll have a scare like i did.

its probably not safe to give raw hide to your pup. teeth are not as strong and its a choking hazard.
