God created the Sabbath as part of creation week. On the 6th day He created Adam and Eve then He created the Sabbath on the 7th day. For anyone to say that the Sabbath was given only to the Jews is 100%, incorrect it was first given to Adam and Eve who we all descend from. This was hundreds of years before, Abraham the Father of the Jewish nation, was born.

People need to understand the importance and the reason behind the Sabbath. Look at the scriptures, God creates man and the very next thing he does is create a Holy day of rest. Why? Because he was tired? or so that he could commune with them?

The truth is God loves us so much and wants to spend quality time with us. Throughout the week we have school, work and other things that distract us from God. So he created one day that we could focus only on Him.

The purpose of the Sabbath is the fact that God wants to take time to be with us and he wants us to set aside time on His Holy day to devote 100% of our focus and attention on Him, our Creator.

Is the Sabbath a burden? God doesn't think so, in fact he says the exact opposite throughout the Bible.

And Nehemiah, which is the Tirshatha, and Ezra the priest the scribe, and the Levites that taught the people, said unto all the people, This day is holy unto the LORD your God; mourn not, nor weep. For all the people wept, when they heard the words of the law. Then he said unto them, Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions unto them for whom nothing is prepared: for this day is holy unto our LORD: neither be ye sorry; for the joy of the LORD is your strength. So the Levites stilled all the people, saying, Hold your peace, for the day is holy; neither be ye grieved.
Nehemiah 8:9-11

"If you keep your feet from breaking the Sabbath and from doing as you please on my holy day, if you call the Sabbath a delight and the LORD's holy day honorable, and if you honor it by not going your own way and not doing as you please or speaking idle words, then you will find your joy in the LORD, and I will cause you to ride on the heights of the land and to feast on the inheritance of your father Jacob." The mouth of the LORD has spoken. Isaiah 58:13,14

God says the Sabbath is a delight, keeping it you will find joy in the Lord, if you keep it he will make you ride on the heights of the earth, and you will feast on the inheritance of Jacob. I can't find anything in that statement that sounds like a burden.

Some people say that Sunday is the new Sabbath for the Christian. Yet they never produce one verse that says this, because it is not in the Bible, Sunday is never called the Sabbath. Sunday is not the Lord's day either. The Sabbath(Saturday) is called the Lord's day
Exodus 20:8
Isa 58:14
Matthew 28:8
Mark 1:21
Luke 6:5

The importance of the Sabbath is it is Holy time for us to set aside time to focus on God. The only way to get close to someone is to spend time with them and the Sabbath was created for us to develop a strong relationship with God.

the Sabbath is not a Jewish observance it something instituted by God, not by man and not by the Jews. It just happens that the Jewish people take God's word more seriously and understand the significance and importance of celebrating Shabbat .
Sabbath is NOT "law" that is no longer valid for us today.
Jesus observed the Sabbath and a true follower of Jesus will observe the Sabbath also- nowhere does the Bible say that we are free from the law, or free from the perfect instruction o f God.
Sabbath is a time for us to cease work, to allow our bodies and minds to recover from the daily grind- to be filled up with the Spirit of God so that we can pour out when called to- it is a time to focus on God and Hiw word and will. It is for us, that we may live a life blessed and abundant spiritually AND physically.
Exo 20:11 For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.
Exo 31:15 Six days may work be done; but in the seventh is the sabbath of rest, holy to the LORD: whosoever doeth any work in the sabbath day, he shall surely be put to death.
Exo 31:16 Wherefore the children of Israel shall keep the sabbath, to observe the sabbath throughout their generations, for a perpetual covenant.
Exo 31:17 It is a sign between me and the children of Israel for ever: for in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested, and was refreshed.
Lev 23:3 Six days shall work be done: but the seventh day is the sabbath of rest, an holy convocation; ye shall do no work therein: it is the sabbath of the LORD in all your dwellings.
Lev 23:4 These are the feasts of the LORD, even holy convocations, which ye shall proclaim in their seasons.
Lev 25:6 And the sabbath of the land shall be meat for you; for thee, and for thy servant, and for thy maid, and for thy hired servant, and for thy stranger that sojourneth with thee,

Hmmm, I was just wondering. Where in the New Testament does it say we don't have to do those "Old Jew Laws" anymore? People tend to use the assumption that the Old Testament was fired out the door as an excuse to do as they please. Yes we are justified by faith and not works, but if we're faithful we will try to keep God's commands as hard as we can. Here's an example: You have to be faithful to your husband/wife. If you're faithful to them doesn't that mean being loyal and helping them always? Or does that mean taking the time out of your busy schedule to sit down and think about them for half an hour every Sunday.

Let's not forget that little piece in the Bible that states "If you love Me keep My commandments"

In Genesis it says that on the 7th day the Lord rested and all was good. We celebrate the Sabbath because God said to. That's why I do...it's a day set aside to worship, reflect and be with family.

sabbath comes from the Hebrew root abat, which means "to cease, rest." The sabbath is the seventh day of the week, the day on which Jews, Christians and Muslims believe God rested after having created everything. On this day, believers traditionally meet for services to worship their God and, often, rest themselves. For Jews, the sabbath is on Saturday (Shabbat). For most Christians, it falls on Sunday (a few Christian denominations follow the Jewish tradition).

The primitive societies found that a day for rest was an excellent idea. They could get together, share their ideas, resolve some disputes, gossip with the friends and relatives, observe some religious rituals and so on.
As the time went on, the focus was on religious rituals ony and the same continuous even today.

The sabbath as far as the saved person is concerned is part of the law. Under the New Covenant, we are not under law but under grace. Now if your apart of Judaism and do not accept Jesus as The Christ, then the sabbath is a law that must be adhered to.

Original word is Shabbes meaning Shabat or simply Saturday, and it is the day the Jewish people consecrate to rest, pray and reflect since biblical times. The day on which God rested from the work of creation.
