Plants take in CO2 from the air. The sunlight helps process it into carbohydrates & sugars for the plant to live on and then it expells the O2 into the atmosphere.

carbon dioxide enters into a reaction starting with ribulose bisphosphate and at the end,carbohydrate(glucose) is formed.
oxygen does not play a role in this process,it is just given out as a by-product.
