They put so much on seat belts in your car, but yet they don't provide any on the metro trains or buses. It just seems like your defeating the purpose to me.

You just said the idea is. On every accident I've seen on tv or read about, its been more than just the driver suffering severe or fatal related injuries.

There is no need to provide seatbelts in public transportation for urban or short-term rides. The risk of an injury accident is already lowered to auto levels with a seat belt by these factors:

1. Professional vs. amateur driver.

2. Size and safety of vehicle.

3. Driver visibility outbound and vehicle visibilty inbound.

4.Design of the interior for efficiency, not comfort.

In Metro and School Busses they do not put seat belts in them because the seat in front of you acts as a "airbag." If you get in a crash the idea is that you will just hit the seat in front of you and bounce back to your seat, but the driver just has a window in front of him so he must have a seat belt.

Bad laws... and screwed up insurance regulations.

Current laws do not require them for passengers.

Believe it or not, unless the law requires them, if they provided seatbelts (or airbags), and someone still got hurt/killed in an accident, they could sue (and collect) because the seatbelt didn't protect them well enough.

But the law *does* require them for the drivers.

the main reason is you have professional drivers who undergo much more rigerous training than say just a car driver. Also you are in a much larger vehicle which in itself provides a lot of protection.

They're impractical on buses and people wouldn't wear them.
