I like OMG's answer best and Chuckie is right on the monay. These two cameras are both products of the same market forces and they have come up with nearly identical answers to the same questions. They spec out practically identically.

Which car is better? Chevy or Ford? Porsche or BMW? Mercedes or Lexus?

If you are "not a pro," perhaps you would do best by going with the recommendation of your local camera shop pro or a friend who has something that he/she likes. If you have someone who is willing to help you learn how to use a particular camera, add ten points to that brand in your decision making process.

These are both new cameras, so you may not find anyone who owns one, but look for a Canon 300D or 350D or a Nikon D70 or D70s owner and play with their toys. See which one fits your hands. See which one talks to you.

I'm a Nikon owner but I'll gladly concede that Canon has a better camera. Canon's 1Ds Mk 2 is considerably better than Nikon's best. It's also considerably more expensive. (These are both cameras that cost over $4500.)
When you look at the rest of the line-up, Canon and Nikon are evenly matched. From $550 to $2800, the various models by both companies leapfrog each other. They're also equals in the lens department - they both make great stuff, from entry level to pro. At the moment, Nikon has a great all-in-one lens: the 18-200mm with image stabilization. But by next year, I'm sure Canon will have one too.
Regarding the 400D and D80, look up the detailed reviews at DPReview or Steve's Digicams. The general opinion is that the D80 is a better all-around camera and that the $200 price difference is justified. One great thing about the Canon, is the built-in dust reduction system. One great thing about the Nikon is the large viewfinder. I'm personally not fond of the 'feel' of the dRebel line. The Canon 30D and up feel like professional machines, but with the dRebels I'm alwayws afraid I might break something. Then again, I also know people who love dRebels for being 'light and compact'! Go figure. Oh, and they both take great pictures ;-)

I'm sure you'll get lots of answers to your question. While Nikon may have had the edge with 35mm film due the their great lenses, I think Canon now has the upper hand because:

1. Canon is the market leader for DSLR's
2. Canon makes all their own components -
- sensors
- processors
- memory
- etc
3. Canon has a deeper product line up - more selection
4. Canon is bringing out new product at lower prices than Nikon can keep up with - the result of making all your own components.
5. Canon has the technology and the budget to dominant the DSLR market

I'll go out on a limb and say that I like Pentax's new K10D better then either, BUT if I had to choose, I'd go for nikon (I like the feel).

DPReview just compared rebel XTi with D80 and in RAW formats they are identical image quality.

So take you pick.... Coke or Pepsi.....

Here's a side by side comparison.

It's probably better to do your own research and draw your own conclusion. It'll be difficult to get an unbias answer because Canon and Nikon owners tend to have strong loyalties to their own systems.

Some of the major factors to consider are: image quality, system expandability - lenses and accessories, etc.
