I noticed many people - even advanced students - are unable to tie their belt in the correct and neat fashion. This is the way I've done it from the start.

Take the two ends of the belt and place them together evenly,
at the back end that has now made a sling or a loop, place your finger so that it straightens the belt out.
You now have found the middle of your belt, place the middle of the belt under your navel (belly button) and wrap the belt around your waist.
take the end of the belt in your left hand and wrap it once over the right end and pull underneath both the right side of the belt AND the part that you wrapped around your waist.
now, take the side of the belt that is on your right side (the side you just tied underneath the part wrapped around your waist) and wrap it over the side that is on your left.
you now have a square knot, if you have any level stripes (colored tape or fabric tape of the next rank to show progression above the base color of your current belt rank), make sure that the stripe is always on your left side (but this part depends on the Martial Arts discipline you study, ask one of your instructors to be sure which side the stripes should be on)

Ok, first wrap it around you waist so the two ends stick out. Make sure the ends are even. Take one end and cross it over the other, forming a loop. Now take the same end and insert it into the loop you just made.and pull both ends so the belt is tied. finally crisscross again and pull again so there is a knot in the middle and the two ends stick out. If you have stripes on your belt, you want them to be near the ends.

There are 2 different ways to tie a martial arts belt. Japanese style and Korean style. Have your instructor or an advanced student show the correct procedure. While it a simple technique to learn, it is very difficult to put into words.

Your instructor should of given you a paper showing you step by step on how to tie your belt if you go to a good Dojo, but here is a website:
http://www.all-karate.com/123/how-to-tie-a-karate-belt
Every Dojo has their own ways of doing this.

Is it a leather or cloth belt.
How long is the belt.
Is the belt for sizing or for show?
Wrap it around your waist and twist it into a knot.
There, now it is tied.

It goes around your waist twice; once for your body & the 2nd time for your spirit. You then tie the ends aroubd both circles, symbolically unifying your body & spirit. I explain this to all my beginners.
