is it better to use a mousse instead of or in addition to hairspray before i curl my hair, and should i use it before and after or just before or just after? will it curl better when it is towel-dry damp or very wet, and should i wash it the night before or right before i curl it? my hair is thick, a couple inches below shoulder length, and hard to curl. i need to do it tonight.

I will try to describe what I do to get curly hair. I wash and blow dry my hair. Then take cotton pieces of cloth, (3-4cm to 15cm)(from T-shirts or even pillow cases :)) apply mousse and roll each lock around it & tie it at the end.
If you can sleep with them, your hair should be curly for about a week. My hair is a bit longer than yours (should be) and I used about 20 curls like those and could be less but I like it this way. . (and I too have lots of hair) When you uncurl them just work with your hands to give volume. Try it. It takes less time than the curling iron and it looks very natural. Also, I do not use hair spray as it needs washing the next day. The only thing you should be careful whatever method you use is when you fold your hair at the beginningso that you don't break the ends.

You can wash your hair the night before or that day, as long as it's completely dry by the time you're ready to curl. I would put the mousse on your hair before you blow dry it. It needs to be completely dry before you curl it unless you are using one of those hot air brush things (like curling irons but have vents cut into the barrel that blow out hot air like a hair dryer). Spray a tiny bit of hair spray onto each section of hair before you curl. Once you take it off the iron, spray again. If you're having trouble getting the curl to stay, work with smaller sections of hair.

It dosent matter if you wash your hair the same day or the night before. The easiest thying to do would to be use hairspray as this will help the curls to take better form and use it after to also help hold the curls in place.

Go to sally and purchase and ask them for a setting lotion to suit your type of hair normally a strong one

I find that the best way is to wash my hair and lightly towel dry it before combing setting lotion through it before proceeding to set my entire head in plastic mesh salon type hair rollers, after that i tye a triangular setting net over them to sleep in them overnight or leave them exposed to let them air dry during the day when i take the rollers out and after arranging my hair into my desired style i then use hairspray

hope this helps
