I want serious answers please..because it looks like a lot of people are confused and think they are at war with Islam and Muslims when they are in fact at war with a group of terrorists who happen to be Muslim..

There used to be a cold war with Russia. When the west was at war with communism..but this caused a problem when this war with extended to democratic communists living in the west and even socialists or slightly left leaning people..in the USA who were victims of McCarthy witch hunts..

Now the west is at war with Al -Queada... But are there some who think they are at war with Islam to?

As a Muslim I'm at war with terrorism and hate Al- quaeda but I'm worried that to many want to extend this conflict to all Muslims...

For some reason Islam has never been a religion without the extreme. Many world religions had their bloody cruel moments, but have since evolved. Most western governments have constrained the radical religious elements. However, Islam is too close to the government and in many cases is the government. Until there is a clear separation of state from the religion, there will be more of the same. I think Muslim countries are at war with western ideology. These countries use war to consume the youth of their country; youth that would otherwise question the lack of individual freedom and great poverty that their government’s policies cause. These governments hold power because they are a government at war and that promotes patriotism, not necessarily any dialog. Most of these countries maintain one party governments.

I think it is going to boil down to that. In England they took a poll after they captured the guys that wanted to blow up the airliners, and 10% of the muslims polled said they would have helped the terrorists and 70% said that they would not have turned them in if they had known about it.
So the numbers are showing that really the west is at war with Islam generally. I would say maybe 5% of Islam is actually terrorist and that is about 50 million terrorists. But 70% will not turn them in or fight against them, so the battle can never be won and the 5% will dominate Islam..
The biggest problem is Iraq is that they can not establish an honest Govt. One group is always wanting to kill their brother muslims and until we have honest muslims then it won't work. The 5% will dominate and evil will grow..
An American saying:
ALL THAT IS NECESSARY FOR EVIL TO WIN IS THAT GOOD MEN DO NOTHING.
Afganastan and Iraq will eventually have to go back to dictators that treat the people badly so they will submit forcefully.
Saddam Hussein had more peace in Iraq than we do now with democracy which isn't working.
If the majority of muslims wanted peace, they could force the terrorists to submit or die and the majority could dominate and have peace.
For the lack of action of the 95% yes we are at war with Islam. And I am sorry to say that..
I do not hate muslims or anyone, but I see the problem and muslims will not correct it themselves. I believe that muslims should stay in their original countries and fight for freedom there. Our founding fathers in the USA fought for the freedom that we now have..

Of course not, that's absurd.

I do have a gripe, though. I spent a year in Iraq and made a few friends there. I was distraught at the fact that to them, there are only 3 religions in the world. Islam, Judaism, and Christianity. They knew nothing of Buddhism, Hinduism, or Taoism. They couldn't even fathom a person like me who doesn't believe in God at all. I think I spent a week trying to explain that to them.

Anyhow, to me not knowing about other cultures is what causes conflict. It's our responsibility to educate ourselves and our children about different cultures so we will have tolerance, not ignorance. To this day, I'm still not exactly sure what point Al quaeda is trying to make. I do know that if it really is about religion, it is a dying battle. It is very hard to sway faith, even harder if you try to do it by means of violence.

Ever since its beginning, Islam has been at war with the non-Islamic world. Islamic terrorism is just a recent expression of that war.
Of 64 battles Muhammad and his followers engaged in, 63 of them were offensive.
Read about the treatment of the Jewish Qurayzah clan, anyone who can justify that, can justify anything.
I don't think anyone actually wants to be at war with Islam, but unfortunately history shows that at the very root of Islam itself lies the belief that Islam is, by necessity, at war with all non-Muslims.

Those who follow that belief today are called Islamic fundamentalists.

Those, possibly like yourself, who dislike this warlike characteristic of Islam are the moderate Muslims.
You can only change this state of affairs by radically changing the fundamental nature of Islam.

I am not at war with Islam. I am at war with hate and bigotry. There are Christian extremists that are just as dangerous as Muslim extremists and there are dangerous people who have no religious affiliation at all.

I am a spiritual person and I believe in religious freedom to explore the mysteries of the universe. Its one thing to join a religion and to share in a way of knowing the unknowable however I think that it is dangerous to define yourself by one system of belief.

Why can't we all just be humans? Why do we need to divide ourselves into this group or that? I think religions like Islam and Christianity have great wisdom and there are things that all of us humans can learn and benefit from but I think that its sad that religious leaders and religious followers feel the need to divide themselves up into waring factions.

Compassion is at the root of many of the world's great religions, its very sad and very dissapointing that that message gets lost in the attempt to control people, in the ever-present political aspirations of religion.

We Americans would like to hear from the Muslim community who speak out against terrorism,We want to know that not all Muslims believe in the ways of the Tali band and Al-QAda.If more peace loving Muslims would voice their dislike of what's happening I think the world would feel then that their are good and bad in all walks of life, but as of now very few of you good people have expressed any hatred of these acts and we know how you can express your dislike over things you feel are unfair,so I believe it's up to you good Muslims to defend your religion, although Islam is not considered a religion, but a way of life.

I believe that many people in the US may feel this way. In other countries, as you know (I am Greek) we are on good terms with Arabs and middle-eastern culture in general and we realize the war is not addressed to the people. But allow me to say that fanatics of Islam do not help people understand that, with their violent reactions against verbal or other peaceful acts they consider insuling. Also, the violation of human rights in many countries based on the Sharia law gives the west an excuse to consider their intervention in muslim countries as a step of progress.

I'm against anyone who wants to limit freedom of speech. If we have to tiptoe around certain subjects because we're not allowed to offend anyone, then that is not freedom of expression or speech.

No one has a special right to not be offended. Everyone should be able to discuss any subject without having a fear of being blown up or beheaded or stoned to death.

I'm against any religion that oppresses anyone.

Religions aren't supposed to oppress but to uplift.

The problem is these terrorist hijacked Islam with shouts of Allahu Akhbar as their war cry. This image is replayed in the media over and over again, slowly brainwashing and enforcing the belief that Islam is a terrorist religion.

Muslims has to be more proactive to mingle with non-Muslims and to excel in areas such as education, medicine or humanitarian action. Friendships among Muslims and Non-Muslims can reduce this negative stereotype. I'm sure anti-Muslims participants in this forum do not have any Muslims friends, so they do not really know who we are.

Peace-
