My fiance and I are planning on getting married. He is stationed half way around the world and I amhere with him. The problem that I am having is do we get married out here so the benefits kick in faster, which would make it easier on the both of us or do we wait until we get back to the states, so our families can be there for the ceremony? Either way we're going to get married it's just a matter of when and who will be in attendance.

I am a US citizen and I came out here to work (we're in Guam) and well long story short ended up staying. The benefits are important and it would save us money with the pack out and the moving expenses. I just kinda feel that if we do it out here, we'll be cheating our families a little bit.

I know several people who had a small legal ceremony to get the benefits and then either had a really nice reception or church ceremony AND reception at home so their families could be there. We were actually going to do this, but things got put on hold and now we're looking at more of a vow-renewal than a wedding, but it happens. If it's important to you and/or your family to see you married in a church "under the eyes of God", then it's still possible to sign the legal work and have a ceremony later. If you just want the party for people to get together, dress up and have a nice reception.
Congratulations and good luck.

If I were you, I would do both. You and him have a small ceremony there and when everyone can be togther back home then plan a big reception. I have experienced a little bit of the military so I think that would be your best bet. Have 2 ceremonies. You'll get to be the bride twice!! Plus everyone will get to attend one or the other event. All your friends there can come to that one and when you get home to the states, have a big family type wedding. That's what I would do!!

First of all, congratulations on your engagement. I want to commend you on living the 'military' life. It is quite different then a cilvian's life (I'm a cilvian but I stayed with a good friend of mine on a military base so I saw how they operated)
How important are the benefits? If they are extremely important get married where you are stationed and then have a HUGE reception when you get home. If you need the benefits that bad don't feel guilty about not having family in attendance. If they have a problem with it let them deal with it, it's their problem not yours.
Best wishes!!

depends what country you are with him in.................certain countries have much harder problems with getting some one back into the country........I am not clear if you are a USA citizen that just went to live near him or are a local girl that he has met whilst serving over there ????

I am wife of Navy man that we met whilst he was serving abroad in my country but we got married here in the USA.

OK , i would have a very small bash and get married there CHECK with base what is required frm them as well as what is needed by the usa on your return and then have a nice wedding abit further on your return to the USA, when we got married it just prior to me returning to the UK again and him going on deployment.................get married BEFORE his orders are issued for his return else they are not going to pay for your move NOR will he have the married mans, weight allowance for packing out. take care and hugs, sometimes the thing that is best for YOU two weigh out what might upset the family
