It was a war between the cousins Pandavaas and Kauravaas.
Dhrita rashatra was eldest brother and was blind so His brother Pandu was crowned as the king. So his Five sons known as Pancha pandavas had the right to the throne But Pandu died when the children were very young so the blind dhritrashtra was crowned. he has Hundred sons Know as the Kauravaas.
The eldest of them Duryodhana staked his claim to the throne. Pandavas had natural right as they were the sons of eartwhile king. Initially the kingdom was equally divide but duryodhan was greedy so he invited the pandavas and made them loose every thing in the game of dice. The conditionwas that if Pandavas loose they must go to forest for 13 years on return their half will be given back .But After 13 years Duryodhan said if they have the guts let them win it in a battle. Thus the Mahabharata war came about

The great battle of Mahabharata was fought between Pandavas and their cousins Kauravas. At this war only Lord Krishna who was the driver of Arjuna's Chariot, gave the GEETOPADESAM.
