1Pe 5:1 The elders which are among you I exhort, who am also an elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed:
1Pe 5:2 Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind;
1Pe 5:3 Neither as being lords over God's heritage, but being examples to the flock

Jer 3:15 And I will give you pastors according to mine heart, which shall feed you with knowledge and understanding.

Do these scriptures give any insight?

Pastors are the shepherds of their congregations. God gives them wisdom on how to lead his people. The qualifications for a pastor are given in I Timothy 3 and Titus 1. The pastor is to feed the flock of God so that they may grow to be more like Him.

Purpose Of A Pastor

The Devil wants everything God wants. He tented Jesus, but also tempted Judas. The Holy Spirit spoke through Peter, and so the Devil. Many Christians departed from the faith according to Acts and Paul's and Peter's letters. Anybody can be tempted. Some will see that they are in battle, but the blinds wont. If you want to know more about the Devil attacks, dig into the gospels. Jesus teaches more than anyone else about the attacks of the enemy and how he comes. He also teaches how to resist. Another one that teaches how to fight spiritual battles is King David. About the call? Not because you rebuked a demon once, you are called to go hunting for demons. Let the Spirit guide you. Paul did not rebuked the demon on a vident girl as soon as he knew she was possessed. The Spirit guide him to do so in Acts 17.

The word translated as "elder" in English translations is actually the Greek word used for a Bishop ("episkopos") or a Priest ("presbyteros").

A bishop's job is to guide his flock, and pass on the faith by setting a good example (1 Timothy 3:2-7) (1 Peter 5:1-3 refering to 'presbyteros' or what we today called "priests" or "ministers" if you're a protestant.)

The Pastor is to lead His flock, not coerce them, beat them with scripture but to lead by example.
Just as Christ did.

Biblically speaking, pastors feed the flock and take care of the sheep.

What is the flock?
The flock that pastors should overseer onto is the one stated in Acts 20:28;

Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all THE FLOCK, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, TO FEED THE CHURCH OF GOD, which he hath purchased with his own blood.

Should we take this literally? Of course not. Others make fun out of this kind of explanation because they take it literally. They say that the Church of God is composed of sheep, catlle, goats etc. If we want to learn the terms used by the Bible, we should confine ourselves by the definitions given by the Bible itself like the discipline given by Paul in 1 Corinthians 4:6;

And these things, brethren, I have in a figure transferred to myself and to Apollos for your sakes; that ye might LEARN FROM US NOT TO THINK (of men) ABOVE THAT WHICH IS WRITTEN, that no one of you be puffed up for one against the other.

Paul, as an authority of Christ's Gospel, is disciplining Christians to limit their faith and beliefs with the written Word of God. For example, Acts 20:28 above talks about a "flock" to feed. Is it really made up of animals? Let's read Ezekiel 34:31;

And ye my flock, the flock of my pasture, ARE MEN, and I am your God, saith the Lord God.

The Word of God in its entirety gives definitions for its own terms. The next good question is: what should pastors feed the flock which is the Church of God? Jesus made clear in Matthew 4:4;

But He answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

Pastors should feed and strengthen the Church of God with every Word that comes out of the mouth of God or Christ's doctrines and statutes.

What I have written above are the duties of pastors as feeders or the flock only. They also have many other duties to themselves, Church-nonmembers, and especially to God. If you want to have an idea of what pastors SHOULD NOT DO, read the epistle of Judas. You'll learn some. If you need to know more, just give me a buzz.

I think the next best question is: how do I know that I am in the real flock Church of God that Pastors of God take care?

The pastor is supposed to be your assistance in your spiritual studies, like the reading of the bible. And nothing more. most times, he doesn't know better.
