The issue of Muslim women wearing veils was thrust into the spotlight last week when Jack Straw said Muslim women who wore full veils made community relations difficult.

He said he would prefer that women did not wear them because they acted as a "visible statement of separation and difference."

Neds / Chavs - tracksuits tucked into socks, burberry baseball caps and hoodies - are these not a "visible statement of separation and difference" too?

I think this is a more major issue which is linked directly to anti social behaviour - why isn't Jack Straw more concerned over this "visible statement of separation and difference"??????????

I agree that there should not be a branch in Islam, even with the undeniable fact that, i won't stick to the Sunni custom who stick to the those that have been in charge for the demise of the Prophet Muhammad's family contributors (pbut). EDIT: to straightforward Muslimah - the Shi'a have not further something to the prayers...the Sunni even with the fact that have replaced the prayers (such because of the fact the crossing the arms, the addition of words to the call to prayer)...Who do you think of could understand a thank you to appropriate pray? the buddies of the Prophet which includes Abu Baker, or his family contributors that lived interior an identical abode as him (pbuh)? His family contributors could understand the right far greater advantageous... EDIT: be conscious...that's the reason there is separation....

Surely Jack Straw was Right. Muslims arent used to live in free societies, when they are given equal rights and freedom in secular countries like Britain they should integrate with the mainstream. If they dont like the British government they should go back to the repressive countries. When Muslim countries dont allow other religon in their own countries, why should Britain be any different.

Caps and hoodies do not cover your whole face. Communication uses much more than speech and taking away facial expression is a massive barrier to communication.

As I understand it, his comments were regarding only the face covering, not the covering of the hair. It is harder to communicate with a person whose face is covered. Most women who prefer to wear the niqab do so because they like the privacy it gives them. Covering of the face is not a religious obligation.

I support the right of women to dress how they feel is appropriate, but it is true that it is more difficult to communicate with someone whose face is concealed. I am sure these women know and accept that.

It's the equivalent of trying to have a conversation with someone who is hiding in the bushes... where they can see you but you can't see them. Not what I'd consider very friendly at all. It's just not right.
