I'm a beginner so I'm not sure. Which is easier to handle etc.?

Is it possible to mix your own gouache? I have watercolours at home so could I add something - maybe toothpaste - to create a homemade gouache?

Poster paint is inexpensive kiddie paint, loaded with fillers and not much pigment. In fact, since the pigments must be non-toxic, they're generally not very lightfast. Poster paint, or Tempera, is not intended to be permanent, and tends to flake off the painting surface over time. Also, the colours are not created from pure pigments and so do not mix well together - the colours are intended to be used alone.

Gouache is made with a heavy load of professional light-fast pigments and binders. It is made opaque with the addition of Titanium Oxide pigment. It flows very smoothly when applied with a natural hair brush, and one colour will cover another without picking up the previous layer if it's dry.

To make it you'd have to use the most expensive watercolours to get enough pigment to make a pure colour after you've added Titanium white, and then the pigment-to-binder ratio would be wrong. You may just as well buy gouache - it would be cheaper, and more importantly, more consistent.

Please don't use toothpaste... it has no binders in it and certaily no titanium oxide... (I hope!)

I don't know how toothpaste would react with the paint, let alone how it would be once dry (it might just flake off). Gouache is just thick watercolour as far as I know, which can give a more opaque layer of paint if used at the correct consistency. People tend to use it for highlights over the top of regular watercolour and other mediums, so it's not really necessary to paint it all using gouache.

You sure are a beginner buddy!! Luckily I noticed your question......Throw that other sh*t out and settle back with some Jamaican Collie from Westmoreland or some Red Leb...my preference is for the better Collie weed, but you may find the Lebanese easier to handle.

Stop stressing, kick back and enjoy the cool breeze......

Oh, and you can forget about goulache, it's too complicated...either microwave a ready-to-cook meal or cookies'll do do the job!

gouache is far easier to use, poster paint is basically what they give you in infant school to paint with. but my personal choice would be acrylic paints. don't mix your paint with toothpaste it's not a good idea.

Yes, Gouache is an opaque watercolor, that is the color is added to China white. Glazing, however, with gouache is an impossibity.
