Pilates and Yoga are both great for strengthening and toning the midsection. Add in a little cardio for fat loss so you can see the results of your hard work.

If you're not responding to traditional crunches then mix up your routine. Standing crunches using a tricep extension machine for resistance should work well as an alternative, also swiss ball crunches, and russian twists. Most people have no problem developing the middle section of the abs, but well defined obliques will give you the look you're going for. The russian twists will work well for that.

First you need to watch what you eat. A health diet is between 1200 and 1800 calories a day depends on whether you are male or female and your height. You can do both at the same time. As you shed the pounds of fat you can sculpt your body. As you are toning and sculpting this will help you lose the fat. This will NOT happen overnight. It will take time.

Do crunchers: keep your but flat and lift like a sit-up but don't go more than half way. Combine this resistance-training with cardio for maximum efficiency.

Ab Lounger, inexpensive and works great. Not as hard as crunches, your other alternative.

push up, seat up and crunches (that is you lie down and lift your legs up straight, about 45 degrees)....that works your lower stomach and hurts like mad.
