I don't understand what "switches off" mean but to reinstall Windows, you have to change the boot sequence. To do that, press F2 to (well at least in my case) go to a BIOS screen and find where it says Boot Sequence. When you get there, change the sequence to have the cd drive frist. Put in the cd at that point. When finished, it should restart your computer. Then it will prompt you to "Press any key to boot from disk..." You do that and then it will eventually get to a screen where it gives you 3 options. Press enter I believe then F8 to accept the licencing agreement. Now this installation can go one of two ways. Repair (which in your case may work) or Reformat

To repair, you press R. Then choose your partition (usually the larger one) Then it will continue. This option doesn't erase your files but it will reset all your windows settings. When your computer is finished with the repair, don't be alarmed if all the icons are big. That's normal and they will become regular after your first restart.

To Reformat, Press Esc. Then choose the partition to format (usually the largest one) and then click reformat in NTFS (I forgot if it was fast or slow option you choose) and then you're on your way . This option WILL erase all your files and return your computer to the state it was in when you bought it. The only thing is that you have to reinstall evrything such as the graphics and sound card again. They are usu. included on a disk from your computer manufacturer.

You will still be asked questions, but easy one such as time zone and country. When it comes it internet setup, click skip

By the currency used, I see your in another country so I hope these steps aren't different over there

Next time, DON"T turn windows update off but put it in the mode where is doesn't automatically installs because you may need some important stuff. Just review the stuff before you download and ask if it's safe to download on websites such as yahoo answers

I read a story on download.com where a guy from spain had a problem which sounds very similar 2 urs. only difference is he wasnt using automatic updates, instead he was browsing a site when a window popped up that looked like it was part of a windows update program popped up. when he clicked ok 2 dl the update he was told 2 restart. when he did the comp was messed up then he restarted in safe mode n opened task manager, where he saw a process called windowsunndate.exe as well as another process with no file extension. right after that his comp shut down, and he had 2 try a few times fore he managed to open task manager fast enough to shut down the process. after that his comp was good as new.

Same thing happened to me a couple of months ago, except that my system has 2 operating systems (XP/linux) on separate hard disk partitions.

The only way I could solve it was by booting off one of the system recovery disks and running the recovery program. However 1st I had to boot off a floppy disk via an external 3 1/2 inch drive (computers don't come with these anymore) and format everything into a single partition.

If you have a 3 1/2 inch floppy drive then you could also boot off the floppy disk and format/reinstall from there.

After booting off something, I would run a scandisk as your harddisk may be corrupt and need replacing.

If none of this helps then borrow something bootable(floppy disk,CD etc) off a friend, you could even try booting off an external hard disk

IMPORTANT--select boot sequence through the bios, so that it knows to boot off the CD instead of the harddisk.

Go to the start menu on your laptop (if you have windows XP) and find 'system restore', trying restoring you setting to an earlier time, pre your windows update, and hopefully that should resolve the situation for you.
