Especially the introduction of Spanish as a second language. Should we institute it as a second language? My belief is that we shouldn't force anybody to learn Spanish. Before you call me lazy or whatever, I do believe we should have people learn at least one foreign language in high school. In fact, I think that we should make fluency in a foreign language a requirement for a bachelor's or any more advanced degree. What I don't believe in is the right of illegal immigrants to sneak in here and then demand things from us.

Patrarno, I realize that Mexicanization is not a word; that is why I put it in quotation marks. Kate, Europeans certainly did not sneak in to steal the land of the Indians. They were rather overt about it. And it matters not what happened in the past. We gained the land through conquest, deception, and annexation. That is how land is gained. It always has been that way. What matters is the present. We want to preserve ourselves, not someone else. I rescind my statement about the requirement of fluency for a Bachelor's. It should be required, however, for any doctoral degree and certain fields of study for a Bachelor's. Also, we should require it for any Master's within a certain faculty. I am thinking specifically of the Arts.

I like tacos too. In fact, my nickname is Taco. But we can get them from legal immigrants and they'll probably be of better quality.

I think that when you move to a country, you need to learn that countries language. If you were moving to Russia, then you would need to learn Russian. If you were moving to Denmark, then you would need to learn Danish or Dutch, etc.. So if someone is moving to America, then they need to learn our language which is English! And NO, I do not believe anyone should NEED to know a second language to get a bachelors degree. How do you figure that??? I know lots of people who have a college education, and they don't know another language, just english, and no need for another language.

You do remember, don't you, that the Europeans sneaked in here and snatched this place from the Indians ?
All second languages, however, are good as this facilitates communication. I am unfortunately, language challenged ( a monolingual idiot ) with Spanish, French and Chinese friends. I would love to know what is actually said but my natural skill was math ( calc > physics > electrical applications ) but not language. No one can actually be forced to learn outside their aptitude, only encouraged.
PS: The Spanish got to the western US before the other Euros, and the English speaking did not get it away from Mexico / Spain until the 1800s, so Spanish is the original Euro language out west !

Mexicanization..........not a word. Spanish as a second language.......learn it if you want to. Should we institute Spanish as a second language? No, English is our official language. Nobody is forced, can be forced, or will ever be forced to learn a language. I wouldn't call you lazy. I would call you short minded. It is a requirement for most high schools and colleges to take a foreign language class. Students can choose the foreign language they want to learn. Illegal immigrants don't have the right to sneak into the United States. What "things" are they demanding?

If you speak English and then learn Spanish you will be speaking the n.1 and n.2 most spoken languages in the world, and then learning Portuguese and Italian is much more easy after learning Spanish, how about that, and french is easy for English speakers, its great don´t you think?. There are American students in my college here in Mexico and nobody makes a fuzz when they speak among themselves in English, a I don´t understand that about American people you get annoyed very easily with that, we also have to take obligatory English courses and nobody complains, and we start learning English since the 1 grade.

I'm not particularly thrilled when I place a phone call to a commercial enterprise, get a recording (of course, what did I expect?), and the very first sentence spoken is in Spanish. That said, I think it wouldn't hurt the U.S.A. to be bilingual. European countries manage just fine with multiple languages. Little Switzerland can even handle three!

It all depends. There are many lovely languages, Arabic, French Italian, CHinese, etc. Some people want to learn a language because of its inherent beauty, and some people want to lean a language to communicate, and it's easiest to do that when you speak the same language everyone else does.
And besides, Spanish is a lovely language itself!

The "mexicanization" of the US is nothing more than one more plot by the marxists in this country to destroy our democracy and replace it with something sick. This is a two pronged attack (I say attack because that is how these people, including the immigrants view it). The first is illegal immigration. 2% of the current population consists of illegals (almost all of whom are mexicans). Yet, 35% of our prison population consists of illegals. Note that you absolutely do not go to prison unless you are incredibly violent and our liberal controlled court system has run out of options for you. 90% of the felony fugitive warrants in california are for illegals. 95% of the murders are done by illegals in cali. Many suburbs of LA have been completely taken over by mexican drug gangs and function solely as drug distribution centers into the rest of the US (a fact recently brought to the attention to congress by rep Tancredo from colorado). It is not a stretch to say that cali only has a crime problem because it imports violent criminals from mexico. My point is that illegal immigration is not about immigrants coming here illegally. It's about an invasion of the US by organized, extremely violent hardened criminals. Most illegal aliens fall into this category. Not some. Not many. MOST. The forces that allow them to come here know this. That is the point. They hope that the chaos these people sow in our country will cause the collapse of our system. They lie constantly about the situation. They make it out as poor, desperate people coming here for a better life but that they can't get in because the "system" is stingy with the number of legals it lets in. But, the numbers don't lie. By all measures, these people are here to commit violent crime and nothing else. under the circumstances, that border fence they are building should be accompanied by landmines and snipers. Wartime tools for indeed these people look at it as a war against us (and aren't shy about saying as much).
As far as legal immigration goes. It's currently at nearly 1 million people a year. That is ten times the amount that came over during the Great Migration phase of american history. You know, the time the history books talk about as being a massive and chaotic burden with incredible social problems as a result. Ten times....wow. I would say that 100,000 a year is the maximum our country can absorb without massive problems. And massive problems are the point. If we keep up this level of immigration, our economy will collapse in short order. It's already strained close to the breaking point and the quality of living in many places in the country has taken a nose dive because of it. This is, of course, the point. By overloading our economy, the marxists hope it will collapse. A marxist utopia (you know, genocide, poverty, slavery....fear....just like all the other marxist utopias of the world without a single exception) will result.

I believe that the current citizens, of which a VERY strong majority are not spanish speakers, are in some ways the hosts allowing visitors to enter. As such, we should be respectful hosts to our guests and the guest should be respectful of their hosts. If they decide to become citizens themselves and we have the space and resources to accomidate them, and they're willing to become decent members of our community, then we should welcome them. The respect thing goes both ways though. My guests should not expect me to spend hundreds of dollars and dozens of hours, that I don't have right now, to be able to accomidate them without ever asking and saying please in some form.* I also agree with you that we, as members of this earth of about 6,000,000,000 people, should become more familiar with the world around us and take the initiative to learn at least 1 other language. We're probably the worst nation on this planet when it comes to being multilinual.
As for myself, I am a native english speaker with a semi-working knowledge of Deutsch (German spelled in the german language.) and I when I get a free moment I'm going to be learning Irish Gealic. After I pick up the languages of my ancestors I'll work on a few others as well.
*Many of my ancestors are German-Americans. I am against people having another language or culture forced upon them. My grandmother has told me stories about her and her relatives being forced to speak english and only engish outside of their home as it was shameful to be german at all. The town just north of my hometown had a german newspaper until WWI when it was closed down in the first round of anti-german BS. My great-great grandmother had german art thet she destroyed because it had german wording on it. Their family bible never saw the light of day because it was written in german. People changed their names so that it wasn't german even longer. My father's side, which has a lot of irish in it, also changed their last name to sound less irish when being irish in Ireland could get you jailed. I'm really big on not forceing a language, culture, or religion on someone.
