Anyone know what I need to do? I want to become an Australian citizen. I have two years of school left and then I'll have a Masters in Biology. Then I want to move to Australia.

I don't want to have to marry, but does anyone know a good way for me to do this?

Contact the Australian Embassy where you are to get details on where to begin, or do some research online. Australia is desperate for skilled workers at the moment but it is likely that you will have to provide proof of an offer of employment, a place to live and enough cash to prove that you wll not need welfare within the first 2 years. Im not sure about working visas but with a marriage based visa you can get a sponsor who will state they they will provide you with housing/financial support (should you need it) during your initial 2 years. Theres a good chance that this might also apply in your case. Best advice is to do plenty of research and have an employer ready to hire you before you apply. Also I HIGHLY recommend that you find an immigration lawyer to guide you through the minefield of paperwork that you have ahead of you. A good lawyer will save you a thousand headaches. Below is the website for the Australian Dept of immigration (dimia). http://www.immi.gov.au/
It has a fair bit of info but advice from people who have actually been through the process is priceless.Good Luck.

Edit..I hope you ingore the people here telling you not to do it. Usually the people who think you shouldnt move to another country are the ones who've never travelled and will never know how amazing it is to experience other cultures. Australia is a gorgeous place and so is the US. Yes you will find people who don't like foreigners...but you will find that in EVERY country on earth. Go ahead with your plans and if you don't like it in Australia you can always return to the US, or perhaps try a different country. Theres a whole world out there waiting for you.
Best of luck to you.

I don't have an answer but suggest you google Australia + immigration laws and see what comes up. I want to applaud you for your courage and doing what you need to do to make yourself a better life. Also I think it's great that you want to be legal and documented and you don't want to try to get an Aussie to fall in love with you so that you can use them for immigration purposes, that's all very cool. I sent you a list below from factmonster.com. It lists the world's most livable countries! Australia is number 3! Not suprisingly America barely made the top 10.

1.Norway 11.Japan
2.Iceland 12.Netherlands
3.Australia 13.Finland
4.Luxembourg 14. Denmark
5.Canada 15.United Kingdom
6.Sweden 16.France
7.Switzerland 17.Austria
8.Ireland 18.Italy
9.Belgium 19.New Zealand
10.United States 20.Germany

You will probably never be allowed to go there. I mean look at the U.S. itself to see that the world is so xenophobic, that all the countries treat foreigners as contamination to be limited to a trickle of immigration.

I'm Canadian, and I mailed the U.S. consulate in Calgary, Alberta, Canada and asked for a Green Card and they never answered me. Even though I'm indistinguishable from the average American, I'm not good enough for a Green Card.

I think we should be able to move around the world freely, but most of us are stuck where we are born because of our identity.

Having family in Aus will help ya and as well as having a sponsor. Being American does not mean you will have an easier time getting into Aus.

Become an expert on Kangaroos or Koala Bears. You shouldn't have any problems. Study the biology that applies to Australia.
