Both the cross and a Christmas tree represent Jesus Christ. So why is one OK and the other not?

I'm not refering to my previous questions, but I know in my town, the police station can not display a cross but they can a Christmas tree.

Christmas is not just an American holiday. And Chrismas does refer to Christ, it means Christ's Mass.

I guess you would have to look into the specific local ordinances in your town to know what their idea is...and then address those in the town meetings..or with the proper authorities if you disagree. You are correct that both are sometimes used as religious symbols...however, the cross is more directly related to Christianity and I suppose therefore more offensive to non-Christians. However, take a stand if you believe they are wrong...we never know how we can affect our community until we try! Best Wishes and let us know what happens, ok?

The cross represents Christ, the evergreen tree represents everlasting life.
If you want to put a cross out there with the tree, then go ahead.
The police station chooses to not display a cross in fear of being sued by the ACLU.
I should say,the mayor chooses that. Most cops would probably love to.
By the way, around here we have those triple crosses on hilltops. They show up in various places on private land.
That is how folks here feel about crosses.
By the way,an un-named respondent or two must be plain stupid to say that Christmas is not a Christian holiday:or that Christmas trees are pagan.
Can they even think?
To yammer on about something that is disagreeable to you is pride and a psuedo-intellectual reach:at least in this sense.

A cross is a religious symbol. While the Christmas tree represents Christmas in a way, Christmas isn't a Christian holiday. Jesus never said to celebrate his birthday, and Christmas was a pagan holiday. Besides, many atheists celebrate Christmas. Its an American holiday, not a religious holiday, young padawan.

You must repent, NAO!!

The Christmas tree does NOT represent Jesus in any shape form or fashion- Christmas was never origianlly a Christian holiday t was adopted from the pagans and names were changed- unfortunately (or maybe fortunately) it has kept most of the pagan traditions and symbolism though it is called something else- it is not what it claims. Because so many Christians, nonchristians, athiests, agnostics, etc. celebrate Christmas according to these generic traditions- the Christmas tree is not very offensive to many. To most it does not represent religion or God in any way, only the Christians, who are deceived or uninformed in the first place, cling so tightly to these symbols that are not theirs to begin with but in reality it is strange fire.

It means "Christ's mass" but there is NOTHING Biblical about the celebration of Christmas and it only takes a minute amount of research to see how and why this became a "christian holiday"
We have forsaken the feasts and instructions of God for the traditions of man, and worse yet, traditions that were rooted in the worship of false gods and worshipping hte created above the creator. Jesus is no longer in the manger!!! Do oyur research because the nonbeliever is more educated and knows more about what christians celebrate and follow more than the christians do and their hearts are hardened and they mock because of it- we are making fools of ourselves holding on so tightly to something , claiming it is ours in the first place and they see right through it and see it for what it really is is no wonder they do not take most christians seriously!

I can take anything unclean and slap Jesus' name on it and tout it around as good, but that does not make it good and does not make it holy, it just makes me bearing his name in vain

On your own property, there's nothing wrong with either, though your non-christian neighbors might take offense if you also put up quotes saying they're doomed to damnation or something. Just be a good neighbor. :)

On public land it's another matter. As others have said, whatever it may mean to you now, the tree was borrowed from the traditions of other faiths and has also been largely adopted as a secular symbol for a generally festive season. Crosses, menorahs, etc., however, are entirely religious and have no place on public land. Remember: the purpose of keeping religion out of govenment is to keep the government out of religion. Religion is simply none of the government's business.

Before Christianity ever existed, pine was used in Yule ceremonies as a sacred herb of the WInter Solstice. Pardon me, I'm not trying to offend you here, but how can a tree represent Christ? When I see a pine tree, I see a TREE. Trees grow from the earth naturally, so that's probably why it's alright to have one in the front yard.

because a Christmas tree is pagan in origin therefor no conflict for them

Jer 10:2 Thus saith the LORD, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them.
Jer 10:3 For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe.
Jer 10:4 They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not.
