I think it primarily has to do with wind force. And thats why moving your had slowly or using a fly swatter works better. When you swing you hand fast to try and kill a fly, there's turbulance in front of you hand because the air you are displacing is actually getting pushed out ahead of your hand, and the fly is so small and has such little density, it gets pushed out of the way by this wind force before your hand can make contact.

It is totally possible to kill a fly with your hand. The problem is that most people try hit the fly with the fastest speed possible: the thing is that speed for flies sort of acts in reverse; if you try hit the fly as fast as possible it will do what it does best and fly away but if you are tactful and lower your hand slowly you are sure to kill it.

It is not difficult if you keep the fingers spread. This helps to prevent the fly from sensing the air pressure when you leave the hand cupped or flat with fingers together. Also remember that a fly can not take off forward.

Flies are quicker than us firts of all...also they are very small and the hand is not completely flat so there are crevices for the fly to not get squashed. Also flies react to wind which since our hands don't have holes in them like a fly swatter to allow the air to travel through ...we create a lot more ....advanced notice...for the fly that something is coming to crush them and they should get out of the way.

Your hand pushes air mass in front of it when you swing it in an attempt to cause the fly's demise, in effect pushing the fly away.
The design of the typical fly swatter is perforated to diminish the air mass, thus causing the murder of the fly to be more efficient.

Because it flys really fast. When you go near it, it flys away. That's what I think.

Because 1) they have lots of eyes and can see us coming a mile away, and 2) they are faster and smaller than us!
