Spare ribs are taken using a local anaesthetic from genetically modified animals whose genes have been altered so that they grow extra long and develop 6 - 10 extra ribs, which have no necessary function within the body, and therefore can be extracted without causing any harm to the animal. They ribs constantly regrow, within around 6 months, and they can then be extracted again and again.

the baby back ribs are the ones that are most sought after. so after butchering the pig and the back ribs are removed, the ones left remaining are the spare ribs. they are also the least expensive, with the least meat.

they are called 'spare' because they have little meat on them, using a different meaning of the word 'spare'. To use something sparingly means to use as little as possible, so a 'spare' rib has as little meat on it as they can get away with and sell it as food. It has nothing to do with being surplus to requirements

Pork Spare ribs are the intact rib section, removed from the pig's belly. As they are removed from the carcas, they become 'spare.' -a pun on Eve's being made from Adam's spare rib.

Spare ribs and ribs are either end of the same bone. The ribs are attached to the backbones and are cooked as roasts. The spare ribs are the loose ends of the ribs.
