I asked the meat cutter in the supermarket that question last week. His answer made sense. He said to look at the sell-by date that is printed on the label. You can keep it in your refrigerator as long as they would have kept it in theirs - which is till that date.
If you think you are not going to cook it by that day, you should be putting it in freezer when you bring it home.

If you don't want your chicken to go bad right away, then put it in the freezer and it will last longer. In the freezer, the chicken will last about 2 to 2 and a 1/2 weeks.

If raw chicken, can be stored in fridge for several days but used within 2 days of date on package.
If cooked chicken, can be stored in fridge for up to 4 days.
Make sure fridge is set to less than 40 degrees. Temperatures over 40 degrees can allow bacteria to grow on leftovers or raw foods.

uncooked fowl should not be used if this is been on your refrigerator extra advantageous than 24 hours. Cooked fowl (in spite of the way that's waiting) should not be eaten after forty 8 hours interior the refrigerator. And in case you're questioning this too, any cooked foodstuff might desire to be thrown away if this is been out of the oven and not refrigerated for extra advantageous than 4 hours. that's a extraordinarily accepted rule of thumb that maximum quickly-foodstuff eating places, colleges, nursing homes, and comparable establishments use.

You should only refrigerate any meat for a day or two at most before cooking. Any longer than that, and you should freeze it.
Also, check the expiration date. Technically, it should be okay until that date. If it smells bad, don't even try to cook it. If you do, it will only smell worse as it cooks.
