I had a German Shepherd Dog who was very fit, agile and confident in most circumstances but he was really scared of heights.

He would not go near the edge of a footpath that had a drop on the other side, was fearful crossing bridges and would not go up or down open staircases. He particularly disliked the type of modern wooden staircase that has no risers - there is just the bit you put your feet on (the tread).

I tried to take him up some stone steps on the outside of an old barn once and he wouldn't take his back feet off the ground. The steps were literally rock solid and part of the stone built barn but he wouldn't budge because the side of the steps was completely open. He was OK with the usual sort of stairs you get in a house.

He certainly wasn't spoilt and obviously was too big to be carried. I had him from eight weeks old and I can't remember anything at all to make him scared but he had a genuine fear of heights.

Unfortunately yes. Some of the Spaniels are very prone to Vertigo as our many long eared breeds. However , Veterinary improvements over the past decade is advancing so much that it is becoming very treatableeven if not totally curable.

Call your vet and let them know your dog's symptoms and tell them your financial situation. Some can give you home remedies and some might even see your dog for a cheaper price when they see that you are concerned but cannot pay the visit. Good Luck!

Some dogs can, but I doubt it in this case, this dogs is just spoilt. Why should it walk up the stairs when someone will carry it? Would you?
