From 1982 through 2004, 55 female cheerleaders were sidelined by direct fatalities and catastrophic injuries, as compared to 11 female gymnastics, according to the National Center for Catastrophic Sport Injury Research. Cheerleading and gymnastics are among the riskiest activities for girls -- riskier than swimming, track, basketball, softball, field hockey, soccer, lacrosse, volleyball and downhill skiing combined.

Common injuries depends on the teen and the type of sport he or she participates in. Most teens are still developing their sports skills and haven't learned proper training techniques yet. Pulled muscles are very common because athletes don't often warm up properly or they don't know their limits. I had a lot of black eyes playing high school basketball because I played aggressive defense under the basket and I was only 5'2" at the time. Every one's elbows seemed to find my eyes. Contusions (or bruises) are common in contact sports also.
