It may be that the game's program is not compatible with your CD-ROM drive. I have this problem with Electronic Arts games. I can only play EA games on my Xbox. I used to have a different computer that could play EA games. I looked up the problems on several EA games' websites and some of them told me that the games were not compatible with certain brands of CDROM drives. Unless you are willing to buy a different CDROM drive or do some major checking to see what else is conflicting with the game like maybe antivirus programs, or other software running in the background; don't bother with the game.

I've read reviews of the game and they say it stinks anyway.

Have you checked that your computer meets the minimum requirements? Most modern games require quite a 'beefy' graphics card. Some will not function at all if you're using on-board graphics.

Post the question again telling what exactly happens when you're trying to launch the game and what error messages are you getting (if any).
