Good morning to you all! I was just wondering, do hospitals still have nurseries, and if so, is there someone in the hospital nursery at all times? Normally, how many people are there in there? I was just thinking that sometimes, there are probably a lot of babies, so I was wondering if they have like multiple people in there with them all? Normally, how long do the babies stay in the nursery?

Yes, hopitals still have nurseries and there is still staff available to tend to any babies in the nurseries. However, the hospital where I gave birth to our daughter (see lnk below) rooming in was encouraged.

During my stay, the only time there were babies in the nursery was during the 6am hour, when all babies were taken in and weighed and had any necessary tests done. Actually, except for the 6am weight in and when she went for her hearing test (all newborns in New Jersey have hearing tests before they leave the hospital), our daughter never left our room.

When we took our tour of the ward with our childbirthing class, we were told that the nursery is rarely used as nurseries have been used in the past. Really, any healthy babies are only there for a short time during their stay (unless the mothers request otherwise) and babies that need a little extra care stay there as long as they need to.

Yes, hospitals still have nurseries. They are usually staffed with five to six nurses at all times. The babies will stay in the nursery as long as you want them too. Some people prefer not to use the nursery while other new moms prefer to get some sleep before they go home the next day and don't have the luxury of a nursery. All babies will spend some time in the nursery whether the mom chooses to use it or not. The nurses usually come around midnight to do weight checks and other small tests just to make sure the babies are doing well.

Now a days they are trying not to have the nurseries. I think they have finally gotten the clue that back in the day alot of children were either being switched (very easy to do), or God forbid, stolen. So now what they try to do is, in most hospitals they have the mother in a delivery room, and then, usually, move them to a recovery room. When the mother is moved to recovery, so is the child....with her. They are getting better at checking all the information about a child before taking the child out of the room and when they bring the child back, but that usually dosen't happen anymore. Its more like if the child has to go anywhere then so dose the mother or someone with her, like the father of the child. Hospitals still do have the nurseries, but usually they are not in use anymore. It is not common practice anymore to have the chicldren stay in different rooms as their mothers. Rather; it is safer to keep them with their parents and it creates bonding between the parents and the child or children.

yes, all hospitals that have an OB ward have a nursery.
yes, there are nurses that are in the nursery at all times. there are always a MINIMUM of two nurses depending on the number of babies that are in the nursery.
the number of babies in the nursery vary from hospital to hospital... how busy the hospital is with deliveries.
babies are usually in the nursery for 24 hours and then they go home UNLESS there are complications.

Someone is in the nursery at all times. Just depends on how many babies are born usually they stay in the room 1-3 days (until you leave the hospital w/ them) unless they are with their family in their own room. Sometimes they have more then just one watching over them all depends on how many babies are in the room.

Hospitals still have nurseries but there are rarely ever babies in them. When I had my son there were complications for both me and him. So he spent some time with the nurses. He also had to stay in the hospital longer than me so he slept there are night. But for healthy babies they stay in the rooms with their parents.

These days your baby does not have to leave your room unless there is a special medical reason, but even then you can insist that they roll the oxygen tent, or incubator in to your room.

Our baby is not leaving our sight after birth, its our hospitals practice to keep the infant with the mother. Esepcially since Iam breast feeding.

I would tell your doctor, and include it in your birth plan that you dont want the baby in the nursery.

They have them. Nurses are always in there. The babies can stay in the mother's room if she wants, but if she wants to sleep and not be woken they will put them in the nursery.
