Bookin in advance really helps most times but try priceline al well I got tickets to Hawaii on a 2 days notice for under $50 bucks by doin the name your own price thing.
You can always try an agent too but then you usually have to pay them to do computer work you can mostly do yourself.

Fly on discount/low cost airlines like Southwest, Jetblue, ATA, Airtran. Also if you book at least 2 weeks in advance, you'd get the airfare for a lot less.
