I need help with two gift ideas:

1. Wedding for my brother. Long Island Wedding. I am the Best Man as well and my wife is a bridesmaid. How much should we give for a gift? Should we provide a supplemental gift as well such as a crystal or just the cash?

2. Engagement party for an acquaintance/friend. I've known the guy for about a year. Never been to a engagement party so any help is appreciated.

Thanks for your help!

I'm sure you have made quite a contribution already to the wedding via tuxedo, dress and new shoes. I think a nice gift is a wine club membership or coffee membership for a year. It's something different and will bring back special memories of their wedding day when they receive their monthly item.

Engagement parties are not usually attended with a gift for the newly engaged couple. But flowers or a bottle of wine for the host and hostess is appropriate..

1. It really depends on what your brother and his soon to be bride are like. You don't want to give them a bread maker if they aren't really big into cooking. It also depends on if they are already living together or are already well established in there homes/apartments. If so they may have all the essentials they may need to start up there home together. Also with things like crystal it depends on if they are going to use it. I know I got some crystal items when I got married here recently and I don't have people over all to often so I see no use for them except decoration. Since he is your brother it may seem unthoughtful if you just give him cash, I would recommend getting something from their gift registry and get them a gift card to the place where they registered. Not only will it be something that they wanted and you can choose what item you want to give them. Plus the gift card is practical because just in case they didn't get something that they wanted they have a gift card to get it!
Something that I got I loved and it would be a great gift for them is get a couple of disposable cameras and have someone (someone you trust wont take disgusting pictures) take pictures while in the wedding, then during the reception take some more pictures as well. Then while they are on there honeymoon get the film developed and buy a wedding album (they sell really nice ones at Kohl’s department store for a reasonable amount). Try and get a big one so that you can put the pictures that you have got and the ones they will get back from the wedding photographer and the honeymoon. I got that as a gift and it was by far my husband's and my favorite one!

2. For your friend if you want to get him a gift. I would recommend a sandwich maker. My husband and I got one and we use it all the time! It is easy to use and since they are going to be focusing on the wedding it is a fun snack to have while taking over wedding ideas!

Good Luck and I hope everything goes well as far as picking out a gift for your brother and your friend!

1. Long Island Wedding for your brother - Just cash is fine. I would say at least $300.

2. Engagment party - Cash is probably best unless they have already registered. If they registered then get a gift. Spend about $30 - $50.

Ah... what to give the couple that has everything. Since you know them, you should know their tastes. There's always simple things like a nice crystal flower vase. But only get something like that if you know they'll like it and actually use it. I wouldn't suggest picture frames unless it's something off their registry. You don't want to be their home designer. Had you not waited until the VERY last minute to get the gift, you could have politely asked them, Is there anything special I can get you and your fiance for your wedding?

I am in the gift/jewelry trade, and I have a few favorite gift idea for you.
I get two very very nice Chrystal wine glasses, and beg a good friend with great calligraphy to ice/etch the glasses with his and her initials and the wedding date. I then box this up with a nice bottle of wine (or sparkling cider if they don't drink alcohol) When at the wedding, I put a card on it saying to "open me first" . I have had many many compliments on this gift. I think my friend gets the glass etching pens at an art supply store. If you don't want to or cant do the etching, there are many beautiful glassware items on the market, in a wide spectrum of prices.Depending on the brand of wine, you can also upscale the price point on this too.Good Luck.

1. For the first wedding you should think about you and your wife when you all were married and what you wanted ,then think about what he might like.May be like something for there house Like Silver ware,Or 2 coffee mugs with each of there pitchurs one saying "I'm with Mr.(his last name) and the other that says "I'm with Mrs.(her new last name). And If you put their mugs to get her at the bottom it will say forever.

2.Just do the same thing as #1 and you'll be fine

1. Money is always good. Newlyweds usually need it to start off their life.

2.Hopefully, they register somewhere so you know what they need, if not ask one of the mothers of the couple and they might know.
