and if a passport is needed, how can I obtain one? Taking a passport photo for a newborn will be humorous... as they change in appearance so fast. Is a newborn passport expensive? Is it valid for a couple of years?

Please ignore some of the responses on here, as some of these individuals do not have a clue about recent changes in the laws.

For U.S. citizens, all children, regardless of age, must have a passport when traveling abroad.

Birth certificate, photos, (which are difficult my kids were done a one week old and there still the same photos now 3 & 2 years later) sometimes marriage certificate it will tell you all the info you need at the back of the form because there is a check list also a good piece of advise take the completed forms to the post office for them to check them over and make sure all the details are filled out properly (they charge a small fee about 4 pounds). passports are about £38.00 and for a child valid for five years.

Yes, quite right. There is now a simple rule. One human equals one passport. The other thing that should be mentioned is that if one parent is travelling with child, a growing number of countries require a written statement from the other parent that they give their consent for the child to enter/ leave a country.

i dont know what country you are travelling from or too, but I will tell you that when my daughter was 3 months old I had to get her passport made for her. it was valid for 2 years and then had to change. if i remember it was cheaper than the cost of mine but I dont recall how much it was (25 years ago). if you are travelling in europe (from and to an EU country) then you should be ok just using a ID card, check with the council of the country you are in or travelling to and they should be able to advise you on exactly what you will need for your child. allow at least 6 weeks from start to finish if you have to apply for a passport.

Yes, a baby needs a passport and they are good for five years. I imagine you'd need to go to the courthouse to get the right documents. I'm not sure because we're military and the government takes care of our passports for us.

Babies do not need passports. However, you should definitely take a copy of the birth certificate!
