He never digs outside, so I am just wondering what is up with that. He will go at it, for a long time, when there is nothing under there

It is instinctual. Dogs dig on furniture or blankets to make a soft bed to lie down on. It comes from the days of running in packs or living outside and they had to dig up leaves, dirt, etc to make a soft bed.

In the wild, dogs do that....they dig to soften the dirt for a cozy place to lie down, and also, to remove any insects from their sleeping place...it's instinctual, not much you can do about it, except if you want him to stop digging on your comforter, offer him a bed or a comforter of his own that he can dig into as much as he likes, and keep him off your bed.

It is a very common thing that animals do. There are actually a couple reasons why they will do it. Nesting, Getting comfortable, just being weird. If it causes you too much grief then I would suggest a visit to your vet to see if there is anything that can be done to resolve the problem. Hope this helps.

Chances are, he is not looking for anything specific. He most likely smells your body scent on the comforter. He might also just be settling in for a nap or making a comfortable place to sleep, relax, etc.

He is most likely trying to get the blanket to be more puffed up and comfortable. take the blanket and fluff it up so that he can get comfy on it and he will finally lay down on it.. You may want to wash it if that don't help.. did you spill something on the blanket that he is trying to get to..
dogs like to dig on blankets to make them comfortable.. You sure he hasn't got a toy buried in it. my dog buries her toys in the blankets and papers if you leave them lay..
who knows .. try washing the comforter..

It probably reminds him of his mother when he was nursing and had to search for a nipple.
