I have been having this debate off and on with my best friend for 3 years now.
I think that when you are in a serious relationship, but feel like things are headed downhill, that you owe it to your partner to either end your relationship let the other person know that you are looking for other prospects BEFORE you start dating new people. Especially when you and your partner are living in the same household, which meaans you would be required to lie to them in order to keep your meetings with these other individuals under wraps.
She thinks that the other person doesn't have the right to know anything about your dating situation unless something actually comes of it, i.e., a possible serious relationship with one of the people being dated with. Again, this is in the course of a SERIOUS relationship in a state of some disrepair yet still intact.

If you're in a serious relationship, especially living together speaking to another partner regarding the possiblity of dating them is cheating. The person is not in a serious relationship then. If a person feels like they may want to spend their time with someone else then just break it off with the girl/guy. Don't cheat, it's pointless and just hurts.
