I've always been under the impression that the person who rear-ends the other car is at fault. The exception being a mailcious short stop by the other driver, which is next to impossible to prove, even though it is a growing insurance scam.

Yes, you should call your insurance company.
They'll deal with the other driver's insurance company on your behalf if you are in an at-fault state such as MO or TX.
If you are in a no-fault state such as MI or MA, your insurance company will pay for your damages; the other driver's insurance does not come in to play in no-fault states.

Call your insurance agent and they will likely get to the bottom of it. They will not want to pay a claim if they don,t have to. I was hit by an uninsured motorist once and my insurance company went after the guy that hit me and had everything straightened out in a couple of days.

The one who hit you is responsible for your damage. If you were shoved into the person in front of you, you are responsible for but can ultimately go after the one who hit you for payment of those damages also. If it wasn't too bad of damage, I wouldn't file an insurance claim as it will make your rates go up, not to mention the deductible you will have to pay. If you can work it out between yourselves, that would be the way to go, if not...your insurance company will be happy to oblige you and either raise your rates or cancel your insurance.

Call your insurance to report the ding they should deal with it from there through her insurance if she was clearly the one at fault and takes responsibility for it, you may have to fill in an accident report stick to the facts and it should get resolved in a month or so.

By all means, call your agency and let them know what happened. It is the insurance company's job to provide your insurance coverage; whether they cover it themselves or bring pressure on the other company to cover it.

Depends what state your in...do you have no fault insurance or at fault insurance. Insurance is different in every state...it all depends on where you are at.
