Your cat is having a dirty protest because he/she is upset at having been left alone. My cats hate me leaving them so they will pee in my open suitcase if they can get to it. They tend to get over things fairly quickly so all should be back to normal soon. If the "missing" the litter box continues, a trip to the vet may be in order as it can be a sign of a Urinary Tract Infection. If your cat has a UTI, it will associate the litter box with pain and will start "going" in other parts of the house.

This sort of punishment is common for humans who leave their best friends alone for a week.
1) take cat to vet just to check out there is no physical problem.
2) begin retraining. Place cat in a small room with clean box, bed, toys food and water. The deal is give the cat very few choices where to deposit waste. He's not going to do it on his bed, he's not going to do it on his food--so that leaves the litter box.
3) clean up soiled spots Use a special clean for cat mess. I like Natures Miracle, you can get it at big box pet stores. Label says you may have to use it twice. Label is right. On the rug she has soiled put one of those carpet runners with the gripper spikes up.
4) after litter box habit is reestablished, let cat out where you can supervise.

This is called a behavior prob.-I have had cats all my life, and dogs do this, too. Your cat is telling you that he missed you, but is showing its displeasure of being left alone by being unruly and missing the cat pan, be sure there is no medical reason for the cat pan thing, like urinary tract prob from a high-protein food.

Your cat is peeved with you for leaving him/her alone. My cat does the same. he digs up pot plants, scratches furniture and bites and scratches me. He has abandonment issues, he was a stray when he adopted me! Just let him bad mouth you for a while, he just wants to get his point across and then he will settle down and be back to his/her normal self. There is no point is starting a battle over it, he just wants you communicate with you!

its just like when your teen children throw a party when your away on holiday, tell your kitty to clean up its own mess and no cat nip for a week!

Perhaps he/she is trying to teach you a lesson about leaving like that...
When I came home from vacation, my boys were scouting through the house with protest signs. lol

cats are social animals, you can't just abandon it for 10 days and not expect it to go nuts. Be glad it didn't pee on your furniture and rip that to shreds.

Patience. Be good to her and she'll come around. She is showing you she didn't like the fact you were away.
