Well, the hairball may have grazed his esophagus a bit and cause a little bit of bleeding - like when sometimes we blow our noses too hard a bust a small capillary, which heals almost immediately. I suggest you observe your cat for the next couple of hours. If he is not in distress (pain, vomiting, no appetite, depressed, meowing, etc.) then, the spot of blood may have been from a small abrasion caused by the forcible expellation of the hairball.

If I were you, I would keep an eye on all of your cats and check for any irregular behaviors. Check to see if all of them are eating and drinking, and check their litterbox to see if their stools look normal. Is it possible that one of your cats got into something it shouldn't have? Possibly chocolate or rat poison? You should also look to see if any of them appear ill. They could have a runny nose, or watery eyes, or they may not be acting like themselves. If you see the bloody hairball again, take your cats to the vet; throwing up blood is never a good sign and you don't want to be too late to help him/her. I really hope your cat is ok! Related: I once had a dog throw up blood; turns out he had eaten some mouse poison. The vet gave us an antibiotic for him and he was fine after a couple weeks.

Try buying the hairball formula cat food--the hair is irritating the stomach lining--if your cat is an excessive washer-licks all the time-it may be a sign of a skin prob. Check for fleas, older cats need a diff diet food than younger cats, easier on the tummy and digestion.

hopefully it was just because he strained so hard to bring up the hairball that it caused a little bleeding but i would keep an eye out for whenever he brings up anymore if they contain blood i would definately call the vet and you should consider getting him on a food that is specially for hairballs i know that purina one makes a food and it is for hairball prevention so look into it and walmart carries purina one it isnt expensive but you will gradually have to change him over to it there are directions on the bag

Go to the emergency vet. They cost a hell of alot more but it's worth it for your cat. He is sick, he could've eaten something sharp by accident and it's sticking in him somewhere. Hope things turn out for the best.

If he shows any more symptoms, call the vets and they will have an emergency number to call. Then call that and ask as its could be serious
