when Christ died on the cross the veil of the temple that seperated man from God was torn in two. this was God telling us that we no longer need a mediator between us and him. for you to go to another person and ask forgiveness of your sins against God is wrong. all christians are equal no one is higher than another here on earth.

Jesus told us to confess to each other, and Jesus gave all of His authority to the leaders of His Church, the apostles, to teach and to forgive sins. The Bishops are the successors of the apostles, and the priests get authority from the Bishops of the Catholic Church to forgive sins in the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

Confession is one of the Roman Catholic 7 sacraments, along with Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist, Marriage, Ordination, and Last Rites.

You are pointing to a key point of the Protestant Reformation. Luther promoted "the priesthood of all believers." This leveling of the playing field said that everyone could interpret scripture and have access to the divine without the church.

The Roman church feared that the general public did not have the education to adequately study the scriptures, and in the best take on their point of view, they were at least taking the bible and the scripture seriously by saying it requires intense study. The intervention of the Church (as the bride of Christ) has been a long tradition in the Roman tradition.

Personally, I don't understand why people confessed to priest in the first place. I believe that you should be able to pray to God in a room alone and tell him yourself that you are sorry for what you have done wrong. I don't believe that you should have to tell another human what you have done wrong when the Bible says that everyone does wrong, which means the priest does wrong too. So I think everyone should be able to confess their sins to God thyself.

The Bible does say that we are to be accountable to one another. Stating your confession out loud to another human has a good effect on you in that it holds you accountable and "publicizes" your sin, making it harder for you to go back and do the sin again.

I'm Baptist, and we do tell our fellow Christians that if they have a sin that has been weighing them down, they need to share it with another believer for that very reason; they will have someone to hold them accountable for repenting. Of course, we take our sins to God directly as well!

YES!! that is so true people shouldn't have to go the the priest to as for forgiveness. but some people still believe you have to do that to be forgiven. But I wonder what little box does the priest go and sit in when he sins. who does he ask for forgiveness when he does wrong.

Confession is a sacrament. It is a humbling of yourself by the very act of opening yourself up and admitting the wrong you have done in the presence of another person. It can be a freeing experience to discuss things in your life with someone who does not judge, and cannot discuss anything that you tell them with another. To get reassurance and understanding. Acceptance. Reconciliation is seen as distasteful because no one wants to bare their inadequacies and faults to another person. But it is wonderful and worthwhile experience in itself.

When we receive absolution in confession, it is always in the name of The Father, The Son, and The Holy Spirit, not merely the priests say so.

I agree with you. Allah can hear you and the priest himself is not above sin, he is just a human being. Why not open your heart straight to Allah?

it has been taught to them since the cradle I guess. Often wonder if the priests laugh about those confessions.
