I am having my first child at the end of December and am a single mom. Do I qualify for assistance for things like WIC? I've heard that while on maternity leave, you can qualify for disability? Is that true? I won't actually have any income for as long as I take off work and my bills won't stop. What options have I got out there?! Advice would be real appreciated here!

Depending on what state you live in, there are a wide variety of assistance available. I should warn you though, that if you want to apply for housing assistance, it often means living in section 8 facilities, and these aren't the greatest of environments for a child or a single parent. First I would look to your friends and family members, maybe one of them wants a roommate. Then, I would suggest putting an ad in the paper, a notice for room mate wanted in a laundramat, grocery stores, and even at your local church. There may be someone just like you in a similiar situation. If you don't find another roommate in time, talk to your landlord and explain the situation. If he/she isn't willing to help you out somehow, then contact your local Salvation army or community center and ask about immediate rental assistance problems. They can usually help out for a month or two until you find someone. I've seen a lot of people in your situation sweetie, you aren't alone. With today's economy and job loss, it's more common than you think. Keep your head up, your child a priority and the mind set that this is only temporary. I wish you well honey.

I'm so sick of seeing people in here talk bad about single and teen mom's!!! You're going to be fine, there is plenty of help out there for you and your child. I'm surprised actually that you're not on WIC yet. Trust me WIC is very helpful!!!! Have you seen the prices of baby formula lately??? Depending on your income you may qualify for foodstamps, medical assistance and so on. Contact your local welfare office and they will tell you everything you need to know. Good Luck and congrats on the baby to be!!!

***Maybe you can hook up with Mr. Maul!!!! He seems like a wonderful man!!!***

Oh, and getting help to keep yourself and your baby healthy is NOTHING to be embarrassed about!!!!! So just ignore all the negative responses!!

Don't worry. I'm a single father. My daughter's mother left three years ago. My daughter is only six now. It's hard. I won't lie to you about that. you're going to have a hell of a time. But more power to you.

Get all the assistance you can. We made the mistake of not getting it, because we thought that we'd be fine. I ended up working two jobs to support my training in the job that I now currently hold. Once it all starts falling into place, it's smooth sailing from there.

At least you'd look perfectly fine if your child wanted to test out your make up collection on you. My daughter enjoys raiding what I have left over from my ex, and frankly, I don't look so good with lipstick.

If you have a low income you can get all sorts of help. You should be able to get on WIC to help you with formula or nutritious food for your self you are going to breastfeed. You should also be able to get state medical and there are food stamps, housing assistance, and cash assistance. It really depends on what state you live in and the amount of income you are making right now.

You will qualify for WIC depending on your finances. You should contact them now and let them know your situation. When on WIC, they will also check out the baby to make sure (s)he is growing and up to date on all shots. Also, contact the welfare office and find out if you are eligible for anything. Why isn't your company paying you during your leave??

well I think you will qualify for alot of things wic being one of those things also if you go to your county job and family service which is embaressing yes but you could get free medical insurance for you and the baby, help with your bills, help with buying food and you can get all that while you work as well it goes by your income but as for disability don't waste your time with that.

Options? Why must taxpayers and honest citizens subsidize your life- style CHOICE? You and the child's father need to step up and support yourselves and your child. You'll feel better taking personal accountability for your life rather than relying on the "system" to support you. Show your child how to be self sufficient. It will be a perfect lesson.
