EAR CROPPING is done at 8 weeks of age and taping is done ritually until they are finished teething or they won't stand correctly. this is a surgical procedure done by a vet. very painful, and difficult to get ears to stand properly unless you know what you are doing. the average cost runs from 300-700 by the time you are finished. have had 9 dobermans in my lifetime and currently have two; 1 cropped, 1 not. prefer NOT.
don't do it unless you get more educated about the breed.
and the person who seems to HATE dobes, you've obviously never been around any other than an occasional bad one. i do doberman rescue, and they are NOT vicious!!!!! get educated, idiot.

Hi, I've had Dobies for the past 25+ years. I always took mine to the vet to have their ears cropped around four months of age. Two that I had I did not have their ears done, just because I wanted a couple with the natural look. Be sure to get a vet with a good reputation for doing a GREAT job. Tell your brother good luck with the dog and they are a wonderful breed. I don't know why Thomas would put a Doberman in the same class as a pit bull. I'll bet he doesn't know much at all about the breed. What he's probably heard is the myths from way back!!! Killer Dogs....NOT< NOT< NOT!!!!!

i'm assuming you are talking about "cropping". Cropping is done to ears while "docking" is done to tails. On dobermans, tails are normally docked withing the first couple days of life (2-4 days). Ear cropping is usually done somewhere between the 12-16 week at best. Any earlier and the ears might not adjust completely. Any later and the ears probably wont stand right. Many people are against both actions but they serve a purpose. First off, don't listen to what people tell you to do and not do with your dog, especially when it comes to cropping ears. So many people see it as cruel but yet they let their kids and families walk around with plugs in their ears and piercings on their noses. Docking and cropping began back during Roman times when dogs were used in battles and as guards of a flock or packs of sheep/goats/cows/etc. The doberman is a mixture of various breeds with teh sole purpose of creating the most perfect sentry/guard dog. The doberman is the ONLY dog breed in history created specifically for sentry/guard work. It is an innate ability to them. The docking and cropping were used to prevent attackers or intruders from pulling on the ears or tails when the dog attacked them. In teh past, there were specific lenghts the ears were cut to and in a specific shape. 3 inches to the tip was the standard in Europe for many years with a leaning triangle figure as the shape. (I've done extensive research on this breed). Today, many vets will recommend teh 4-5 inch ears as opposed to the 3 inch. 3 inch is more intimidating though (they look like little devils). The decision to crop ears is your choice and no one elses. Tell those who say otherwise to go to hell. Cropping is now more of a tradition than a necessity in this day and age with again keeping the original standard of having the perfect senty/guard dog specimen. Contrary to what people argue, there are advantages to having a doberman's ears cropped. Because of the shape of the ear, they have tendency of holding in water which could cause ear infections in teh breed. People will argue this but the reality is there have been no test to prove it right or wrong, (again a traditional thing) Also, because of the lenght of the ear, they are prone to some accidents while breeds that have erect ears are not. Visually, i believe it is better, but that is my belief. Also, another way to argue it is that many people say cropping ears is wrong but yet spaying or neutering a dog is okay. Isn't their arguement to leave the dogs as nature intended?? Hmm... why the double standard? In the end, its a personal ideal that you should make your own decision about. Remember, however, if it is past the 10-16 week mark on your dog, it is too late for cropping ears. the cartilidge has already began to harden and you won't be able to make them stand fully erect anymore.

i see stupid people, u cant compare a dobe to a pit for one and cropping of the ear & docking of the tail is a showdog trait be like buying a car and not putting gas in it.docking should be done by first three days of life and cropping at or before three months.if you want them to both stand up right. got to keep the ears posted to train the ears to stand.there is to different types of cuts the german and english one is very short and fat and the other is long and narrow which is my favorite but harder to get to stand. hope this helps

Ear cropping is purely for looks. I currently own a rescue Dobie who's ears were done before she came to live with me. Whoever did the surgery cropped far to short and now her ears lie flat on top of her head. My suggestion? Leave the ears alone.
Please tell your brother he made a great choice. Dobies are wonderful, kind, loving, dogs.

I keep Dobes and i live in the UK so if its cropping you are asking about its illegal here. Why on earth would anyone want to do this, what benefits are there for the dog NONE..Its all cosmetic..If it really needed to be done every Dobe all over the world would have it done..So stop playing God and leave the poor dogs ears alone.

You mean 'CROPPING'?
It should be done as a pup (usually under the age of 5-6 months).
Although it is illegal now in quiet a few states/countries.

I assume you're asking about ear cropping? Ear cropping is something done for no reason other than looks. It's not recommended, and in fact there are now vets who won't do it due to the pain it causes a puppy for no valid reason. A lot of people no longer crop ears - it's not necessary.
