Some suggest that promiscuity is the problem. If that is the case, then how will prayers, our money, time and aid correct such an ingrained problem?

Unfortunately, time and education are the only solution. Education is needed because the situation cannot improve until the African people fully understand that activities that are traditionally acceptable put them at great risk.

For instance, it is not unusual for the men to have to travel far from their homes in order to work. Traditionally, it was a "don't ask, don't tell" situation in that they quite often have another sexual partner in the area they travel. When they return home, it is unacceptable for their wives to request a condom be used, even though she knows he's been involved in risky behavior.

Other traditional behaviors such as circumcision, genital mutilation and vaginal drying increase the likelyhood of transmission. Proper instrument sterilization must be learned, understood and used consistently.

The majority of HIV infections in Africa are the result of unsafe sex, not IV drug use. It has been estimated that unsafe injection practices account for only about 2.5% of HIV infections in Africa. Unsafe sex is by far the predominant mode of transmission. The number of infections due to unsafe injections is not insignificant, and efforts to improve the safety of medical procedures form an essential part of HIV prevention.

Life expectancy in most African countries is under 40, which is the lowest rate in the world. AIDS is the leading cause of death and most AIDS deaths occur among young adults. These deaths have a devastating effect on families, communities and the economy. The epidemic is wiping out development gains, orphaning millions of children, and fuelling the spread of other diseases including tuberculosis.

Prejudice will definitely not help the people. It all goes down to education and communication. Reaching to the very remote and uncivilized places and teach the people practical ways to prevent this pandemic. There's nothing impossible. I feel sorry for these people because they're poverty-stricken and helpless especially when it comes to their health.

I am the first generation to be born in America. I can think of a few solutions- donating money to Africa, donating your skills/talents to help them improve (doctors, teachers, social workers, etc), or just simply pray for them.
