Those who wouldn't be capable of moral behavior without the threat of divine retribution are the ones who insist on sticking their "God" and "10 Commandments" into everything.

I'm not religious, but I've read a little, and Jesus made several statements that would indicate that he believed that Christians should not be making political power moves. The most obvious one would be the "rend unto Caesar" statement, which would seem to advocate separation of church and state. In other places, Jesus remarks that one must be either of the world or apart from it. I would interpret this to mean that Christians, in the truest purest sense, are to leave the act of governance to people of the world, and not dirty their hands with it. But that's just me. I don't like religion in politics simply because it makes it all too easy for one faith to attempt to set up a theocracy.

The funny thing is, for example, in the US 90%+ of Americans claim to be Christians, yet the laws go against the belief system of at least 50% of most Christians. Hence politicans and judges vote their own conscience.
We have no fault divorce, which goes against Jesus.
We have deregulated sex outside of marriage, which goes against almost any religion except Satanism and Paganism.
We have the death penalty throughout most of the US, which goes against the 10 commandements and Jesus.

Complete separation of Church and State is not achievable. A persons religious beliefs shape their ethical and moral choices, and this will, in turn, shape the type of society in which they wish to live. They will, therefor, vote for candidates and support parties who share their beliefs and whom they believe will create that type of society. The pervasive Christian influence in U.S. law is a result of our history. U.S. law is derived from British common law since those were the laws and customs with which the people living here and creating our laws had grown up and were comfortable. British common law was derived from Church of England religious canon, which was in turn derived from Roman Catholic religious canon. Same sex marriage is illegal in the U.S. because it was forbidden by the Pope in the 10th century, and no-one has ever questioned it. The same is true of our sodomy laws, which are based on St. Paul's injunction against non-procreational sex, it is against the law in most states, and for all members of the armed forces, to perform oral sex on ones spouse. Those are just two of the most egregious examples, there are many others. Any attempt to root out the Christian influence in our laws would require the repealing of laws that are centuries old, and of the attitudes that go with them, which is not feasible in todays political climate. Thomas Jefferson felt that no law should stay in effect more than 50 years, if the law was still valid it could be re-passed, but laws that were out of date could simply be allowed to die out. It was a good idea, but required to much work on the part of our legislatures. For my own part, that is a Consitutional Ammendment I would support.

Sonny fella, as far as I know there are no laws saying you must be a religious person. If there is in your town, you need to move. Moral issues don't always have to do with religion. Sometimes they are just the right thing to do between one human and another.

At John 15:19, Jesus said that his followers should be no part of the world, which includes politics. He set the example by getting away from the Jews when they tried to seize him and make him king after he miraculously feeding a multitude of people.

George W. Bush and his holier that thou evangelical Christians are trying their darnedest to push their religion in the USA, and have our Constitution and laws changed. I do not believe this is right--------there are too many religions here, to single out one. A moral man can be good in our government, without being a religious man.
Religion and government have no place together.

First thing-the separation of church and state was not created to SEPARATE CHURCH AND STATE.It was created to keep the government from having control over the church. It was the separation of the laws to govern the church. It was not intended the other way around. And we do not want to change the constitution--we want to keep it the way it was written, without all these attorneys disecting it daily to try to make it say something it doesn't.

As for Christ-ian more-ality, Bible says it shld not be in the form of laws(ordinances) nor legalistic legislation thereof (which would be "spiritual wickedness" in "high" places) stinketh to high heavens; But rather it shld be grace full, mercy full, peace full. For Christ is the end of the law; And being like God is: perfect(Mt 5:48) is also merciful(Lk 6:36), Christ (in whom the Godhead dwelleth: that God was in Christ reconciling the world) is thereby about peace and not division, rather than division and not peace, as was Jesus(Mt 10:34; Lk 12:51; Jn 7:43) who got hung up on a tree, a dead tree. Not to mention: "Cursed EVERY ONE that hangeth on a tree", is obviously opposite of Blessed every one; And via the curse of the law, which accurses all if any go there, to such bwd <-BC, is biblically called "draw back" to "perdition".
As for the Government, Bible says it shld be up-on the shoulders of the perfect man Christ, which is higher up than bowed down a*s kissing; For an holy kiss may be a law kiss, but an holy kiss of charity(never faileth) is clarified as a grace us kiss.
Greet all brethren with an holy kiss of charity(never faileth), for a*s kissing oft faileth to convince divided a*sholes not to sh*t on you, even if you dble kiss both cheeks thereof such law law.
The GRACE of our Lord Jesus Christ with you all. Amen.
