Although I have not been in this situation, I can only imagine how hard it could be especially if the family holds on tight to their belief. I guess in time, they will accept it. I know a friend who is born a muslim after her father converted to Islam. His family opposed him at first but now she has good relations with her extended family.

Of course. Our upbringing is part of who we are. I was a very "loyal" Christian, I loved my church, what it stood for and even headed some outreach programs. Then while taking college courses, I chose "World Religious Traditions" as an elective. I didn't know half of the ones I studied even existed!!!! Anyway, as I began feeling that something was missing in my life I studied more and more on different spiritual beliefs. Eventually I found Paganism.. From there, I found Wicca.. My mother was very accepting of it, and in fact had been trying to tell me for years that there was so much more than what I wanted to believe. As for the others in my family, they are accepting BUT they do fear for my soul. :) It is hard going against what everyone else is doing, or believing..

It's not hard. You just do it. Either they accept it or they don't. My family believes. I don't. That's just how it is. They constantly preach to me, but it's fairly useless. You'd think someone who bore a child and had known him all these years would realize that the last thing you do to a person as stubborn as I am is attempt to change him. But they'll get over it in time. Or not. Doesn't matter.

i was raised a jehovas witness, nice cloths but years and years of bible study. When i was eight i asked,'if god is perfect why did he make dinasaurs just to see them die. If god is omnipotent how can he be testing which of us are sheep and which of us are goats if he already knows the answers?
i was told that i was to young to understand.
Now im a young teenager and basically i think humans are moneys with two different approaches to problems- a ship is in a storm, some monkeys say bail water, other monkeys say no prey to the big monkey in the sky.

Very hard, but just because they have swallowed delusional superstition, doesn't mean you can't become a rational being and chuck all silly god concepts on the dung pile , where they truly belong. My family accepted my choice and two joined me (we are a bright family) except for my dad, who was a jacka$s anyway.

When I converted to Paganism, I only told my folks I wasn't going to church anymore. They were heartbroken but I gave them a very clear ultimatum, get over it, or I will move on without you. They dropped the subject there. Though it was a cruel thing to say, it allowed them an opportunity to focus on what was important, and that was the fact I was still their son.

My parents couldn't agree on a religion and basically left me on my own to explore. I ended up Pagan and they both just accepted it as my decision. In this, I consider myself quite lucky.

No. If you have an open mind and educate yourself in other religions you may choose to believe in another religion.

Definitely.
its amazing how people can believe with such conviction whatever was taught to them from childhood.
Its makes you wonder to what extent your faith is just an accident of geography, time and biology.
