The red light is auto-focus assist. The camera needs this in low light situations.

Errrr. The Red beam is only for the distance to the subject used for the focus mechanism.

The light meter is inside the camera and measures the light that comes in the front of the lens from the subject that has been framed. It probably does some type of matrix metering where the sensors are set up to measure different areas of the screen and take an average or in the case of spot metering, it will measure a small area around the center (assuming that the center of the screen is the actual subject that you are trying to take a picture of.).

lol.. If it were disposable: probably. If it were from a person I knew had good intentions but didn't know any better I would accept it with a smile. But still, there are some pretty awesome 35mm point and shoot cameras that came out before the age of plastic. Many fixed-lens rangefinders and other vintage cameras come into mind -- many of them look and still work great.

the red beam of light that comes out of the front of the camera does 2 things, checks focus for the lens and gets the light reading for the meter.

It should be showing in most cases when your inside (it helps the camera in dimmer situations.)
