It really depends on how late you are getting home. Most communities have a rule about how late noise is acceptable. Where I used to live, after 10pm I had the right to complain if I couldn't get to sleep (or whatever I wanted to do) because of the noise level coming from someone else.

I think your best move is to call your local ASPCA or Animal Control. If anyone is going to know the laws concerning dogs barking, it's going to be one of those entities.

We're actually dealing with a similar situation right now. Our neighbor leaves her dogs out if she's gone and they bark until she gets home. Right now, she's been gone since at least Monday. They haven't been quiet since. It starts to wear on the nerves, I know.

It might sound like a compromise that shouldn't have to be made on your part, but until it's dealt with maybe you should consider picking up some ear plugs or going to sleep with music or the tv on. When I lived in the city and had problems with my neighbor's noise levels, I would run a window/box fan while I was sleeping. It acted as a white noise machine and pretty much drowned out any noise that was coming from downstairs.

Give the ASPCA or your local Animal Control a call and see what your recourse is.

Good luck.

This is because they are natural born guard dogs and hear sounds they can't explain, the only way is to bark to warn the sounds they don't know, to warn us humans.

its a conspiracy, they have a little look out dog like a little chiuhauha or something, and he runs off to tell them all when you get back so they can all shout as loud as they can to keep you awake.
alternatively, they bark all damn day long like my neighbours dog and you just don't know.

Nothing to do with you. There is less noise at night,so they bark at the sounds they do hear.

It probably just seems that way. I'm sure the dogs don't have you on a timer. When you are tired and irritated anyway, anything can set someone off and get them upset.

They don't, but if they did, I would put my earplugs in and go to sleep.
