They don't think about it, it's a natural thing to do when they leave the living tissue of the nail bed. (That's the pink area of the nail).

the whole nail is white, its just that when the nail underneath isn't in contact with the finger it appears white. the red flesh of the finger makes the nail look pink.

Most finger nails are extremely intelligent.
Mine have studied at a variety of universities.
My thumb nail has a masters in psychology so knowing when to be white and pink is a doddle for it.

Fingernails grow from the bottm up its called the matrix (Only living part of the nail)
The nail plate is mainly pink because it is attached to the skin underneath (nail bed ) as it is fed by a blood supply. It becomes white at the top (free edge) when it detaches from the nail bed and there is no longer a blood supply. It can take up to 6 months to grow from the matrix to the free edge this varies from person to person.

They only look pink because of the tiny blood vessels underneath them on the nail bed. When they grow off the nail bed they then appear white.

the nails are naturally white. but you do not realise as the fingers are underneath which makes them appear pink. so its not just he end that is white. it is the whole nail.

Its when they grow too long to be actually touching your fingertip the white bit is the bit that is not attached to your finger and the pink bit is stuck firmly, try grabbing the white bit with pliers and pulling the pink bit off you finger, i guarantee it will go white when it comes off!
