yes you can get drunk from it:)
For a first time red wine drinker I'd recommened a Pinot Noir. It is very light in body and easy to drink!

A really great cheap bottle of wine I had not long ago was "Fish Eye Shiraz". Fantastic stuff for it's price. - Abouth 9 Bucks. The other Fish Eyes are supposed to be good as well, I'll try them this winter.
I fell in love with wine after drinking Aziano 2001 Chianti ($19.00) a few years ago. Quality stuff, but a tad more pricey.
While I was at college I used to drink Barefoot brand wines. They are $6.50 a bottle and I think they taste wonderful, however you will have a bad hang over if you drink the whole bottle.
Also always check local wineries. I'm a big fan of small, local wineries because they tend to make wine for people who aren't always wine fans. Might be a great place to start?
And yes, you will get drunk from red wine. Alcohol = 12-15%

Oh yes, you CAN get drunk from wine, trust me!
My favorite is Shiraz, especially The Little Penguin Shiraz, and it is only about $8 a bottle. Good stuff!

My favorite red right now is "Red Truck". It's about $7/bottle and is fantastic. I'm also a fan of Yellowtail Shiraz for roughly the same price.
