first you need a solid foundation to build on, and the way that happens is open and clear communication, next is the mutual respect and trust for one another, as long as both parties maintain those 3 factors, there should be no glitches, oh yeah, I almost forgot about the intimacy for each other, but thats the least of importance, a relationship is always a two way street, try and notice things go to hell when one trys to sneak through the backroads!

Get rid of the need to be always right over things that dont matter.
Respect others opinions
Dont accept things that are outside your morals
Accept things that are insignificant.
Use your partner as a means for personal growth
Let them push your buttons, and use this to heal
Dont accept violence no matter how small
Dont accept verbal or emotional abuse
Work on increasing love, respect

Both must be trustworthy.
Both must be reasonable and willing to compromise at times.
Neither should be the one to do all the compromising all the time.

honesty is best policy for lasting freindship with love care and responsive partner in freindship all the way for lasting love, but it is diifcult since first of all partner should also share the similar views
