I've wondered this also and come to the conclusion that they get the jist of what they other is saying. Cats and dogs both growl, and a lot of communication is with body language, which is sort of similar between the two species. My cats and dogs seem to understand each other well enough.

Yes - cats do communicate with other cats in many different ways: through vocalizations, body language and eye movements. All cats seem to be born understanding their particur language. I think your mama cat is teaching her kitten how to hunt, stalk and pounce on a prey (judging by your description of their behavior). Cats "chatter" their teeth and jaws and switch their tails very energetically when they sight prey that is very interesting. Just before they pounce, they go absolutely still.

I think that cats do communicate with a fairly large repertoire of body language, but we are generally unable to understand it or unwilling to learn it. Do you know what your cat is expressing when he shakes his paw, for example?
Certainly part of this expression is to do with head movements and position of the ears, and probably a whole lot besides. Haven't noticed my cats moving their lips, but I will look more carefully from now on.

I've never seen that before but I have a brother and sister. They clean each other, put their arms around each other when they sleep. They are always together. I think that there is a silent communication between animals. When one is in another room, the other goes to find her.

Of course cats communicate. We just aren't, for the most part, sensitive enough to understand "kitty talk". It isn't meows for the most part. It's body touch and smell language. When they put their heads together they are exchanging scents. Cats can learn alot by smelling

I think they communicate with each other. I would assume all species have a way to communicate or procreation would would not be possible.

I think they do.What's life like if you don't communicate? I'd say it would be pretty damn boring.
