Both the previous answers are good...(concerning temp. and time)
I have two tricks of my own,
One: I put them on a metal skewer (like for shishkabobs). The metal helps them heat faster from the inside and shortens the cooking time, as does the foil on the outside (this keeps the steam inside). There are actually special skewers made to hold 4 potatoes that you can find on the market...
The other trick, if you are in a bit of a hurry is to put them in the microwave about 6 to 8 minutes. Then cover with foil and finish baking in the oven (preheated), this should cut your baking time nearly in half..so I won't give you an exact time. Check them by pricking with a knife or another skewer, when it goes in easy they are done.
You can also make jacket potatoes in the microwave completely, place 4 good sized potatoes in a microwave dish with a cover... cook on maximum power for aprox. 15 minutes. They won't have a crispy jacket, but they cook well, and are nice and tender...You could always put them under the grill a few minites to make them crispy.. (don't use foil)
In the summer I also cook them for 10 minutes in the microwave, then cover in foil and put in the back coals of the barbecue while preparing the meat on the grill...this finishes cooking them, gives them a great flavour and adds the crispiness to the skin.
There is also a difference in potato types new potatoes cook faster, as do red ones...
Jacket potatoes are the least fattening way of consuming potatoes, as long as you don't smother them in butter, sauces or sour cream...
They are excellent with just some salt and pepper...Not exactly "diet" food, but the best way to eat them!
(I think I'll try the water and salt trick myself!...sounds good!) :-)

Large potatoes at 180/190 degrees C for at least one and a half hours. Makes lovely crispy skins to eat, well cooked on the inside. Remember to prick the skins all round with a fork, as under extreme conditions they could break out.
If you put a CLEAN large nail through the potatoe it will cook a little quicker.

Lazy cook's tip - they only take 4-6 minutes (depending on size) in the microwave! Wash, prick with a fork, then wrap in a piece of kitchen towel. They're done when they give slightly to the touch. You can then pop them in a hot oven for a few minutes to finish off if you want, but it's not essential. Extra nice if you slice them in two when they're piping hot, and sprinkle with grated cheese.

Are their jackets light cotton or wool?
Just kidding! Wash potatoes, roll in salt and bake at 350 F for about an hour. Check with fork to see if tender.
Variations: Make small slice into potato and insert a bay leaf. Also, try it with a garlic clove.
Happy spudding!

About 1 hr at gas no 8 A good tip is to damped the potatoe first then rub it with salt, it gives the skin a lovely crispy texture and tastes yummy.

200 degrees C for about 1-1.5 hours. It's also a good idea to use a fork to prick the skin of the potato all over before cooking.
