My machine is running XP Pro with Office 2003.

I have an Excel file with a few hyperlinks to pictures (jpg) on the same PC.

Now, if the default pictue viewer is Picture Manager, strange things happen. If the hyperlink is to a picture in 'My Documents', it works. But if it is in any nested folder within, (either My Documents\My Pictures) or deeper, when I click on the hyperlink, the Picture manager opens up showing thumbnails in the 'My Documents'.

If I change the default viewer to Fax viewer, its even worse, nothing seems to happen.

On the other hand, if I use IE6 as the default picture viewer, the hyperlinks work, however deep they are.

Of course, Picture Manager and Fax Viewer both work fine if I actually go to the folder and click on an image.

Well., For every software there is something called default setting. for Picture viewer and Fax viewer, its all the same.

The excel also has default settings, just like your operating system. now.. this is want is defined with machine.config file in .net.

IE 6 works well because its browser and it has it own configuration files to operate from.

now for every application from then on.. has to be changed operate.. because there has been a change in the approach of software development with microsoft. because of this effect half the setting which were developed after dotnet influence take care of its proper functionality while the others which were designed little earlier don't.

every application has a configuration which need to inherit others from its machine configuration files. check this out.
