If the natural selection theory were correct, then mankind should already be extinct for beleiving in Gods, right? Pray to god or defend yourself? Critical thinking suggests action s superior to prayer.....as does common sense and experience... yet superstitions thrive.. why?

I suppose a clarification is due. Natural selection is the survival of the fittest, it's my contention that mankind can't be the fittest for long if he ignores what his senses tell him, or doesn't tell him ( like there being no god) man's senses and reasoning ability would indicate that: A) there is no evidense of a god and B) action gets more results than wishing (praying). these two facts should be self evident, yet the dominant species on earth willfully disregards them.

Some of us are. The first sign a species is becoming sentient is when they have evolved to the point where they can abstract enough to invent a god. The first sign a species is achieving sentient maturity is when they get rid of their gods.

Natural Selection is not an issue when Religion or religious beliefs are the question. My interpretation of NS is how life-forms develop and evolve over time - become extinct or live on and become the dominate species on the planet.
Now to the other part of your question: Shackles donote slavery don't they? Religion and religious beliefs are a matter of choice. I don't think they go together but that's my reasoning.
I think that people who fervently believe in GOD and/or what ever deities they worship or pay homage to look to these for salvation and eternal life rather than have to face the finality of a mortal existence.
These people are entitled to their beliefs just as those who don't believe are entitled to their's. Maturity is a mortal development that leads to old age and finally something we must face in time - death, but don't you think if that if there is some glimmer of hope for those people who believe in GOD that they will be given eternal life? Let us/them believe and we/they will mature as time and our choices lead us.

Simple, religion is a part of society culture, symbolizes good up bring. Our society developers must be un sure of what would happen if religion were removed from our minds or they keep it because, people need some type of hope that they will be set free from their oppressors (They that command that we build for them). Natural selection, I wounder how would we feed ourselves, since we are now so dependent on others to feed us, society is the cause for all that is bad. We are born into this stupid world and laws of those before us and they must be learned and the societies think religion is the best place.

Man has an inherited fear of death, and what happens after it.
If the course of natural selection were defined for everyone in one belief, then they would not fear, but look forward to death, and what comes after.
Are we ready to die?
Are we sure when we die that we will evolve, or become another life as in reincarnation?
What happens if one is not a believer of God, and when they die, find out that they should have been?
Where does ones common sense derive from?
Natural order will never replace the fear of the unknown.

It took millions of years for mankind to develop the ability to think at all, you honestly think they will develop the ability to think well in a few lousy millennia? Your assumption that belief in God means lack of action is clearly false, how else would there be Gods and Goddesses of war?

No, you are wrong. The theory of natural selection says nothing about religion. This should be obvious to anyone who thinks critically or has common sense.

have you considered the possibility that maybe theres something to them?
that just maybe, some people are capable of perceiving an additional layer of existance beyond that of the 5 organic senses?
and do you really think science would be any better? trust me, it wouldn't.
Science explains the mechanics of things, thats its function and purpose. but people still want to know WHY. which science simply can't answer.
and what about when people observe things beyond that which science can explain?

your hypothesis suggests humanity will in some way supercede religion simply because humanity is evolving.
I do not see todays humanity any different than yesterdays humanity although we have faster cars and microwave ovens.
It is the same flawed principle as when someone says 'but hey, this is 1980!'
as if we are any different than from 1970 or 1790.
technology and society is changing, but humans are humans

When Nero ruled in Rome Christians were thrown to the lions. It was because they faced death with such serenity, that a lot of people started to believe in Christ our Saviour. The church always grew under persecution.
